Drought Information Statement for Kansas Valid November 14, 2024 Issued By: WFO Wichita This product will be updated as drought conditions warrant. Widespread heavy rainfall amounts since early November have drastically improved drought conditions across the Kansas region. Drought Monitor (as of November 12th) Drought intensity and Extent D4 (Exceptional Drought): None D3 (Extreme Drought): None D2 (Severe Drought): Small pockets of north-central and southeast Kansas. D1 (Moderate Drought): Large portions of northern Kansas, and small pockets of western and southeast Kansas. D0: (Abnormally Dry): Much of Kansas with the exception of the southwest quarter. 4-Week Drought Change Drought Worsened: One category for a small portion of north-central Kansas. Drought Improved: 1-3 categories for large portions of western, central, southern, and eastern Kansas. 8-Week Drought Change Drought Worsened: One category for pockets of northern, northeast, and southeast Kansas. Drought Improved: 1-3 categories for large portions of western, central, and southern Kansas. Precipitation Past 30 Days All of Kansas has experienced above average precipitation the past 30 days, with some areas seeing at least 300 percent of normal. Precipitation Past 90 Days Mostly near to above average precipitation was noted across Kansas the past 90 days, although small pockets of below average precipitation were noted over northern and eastern Kansas. Temperature Anomalies Past 7 to 30 Days The past 7 days, cooler than average temperatures were noted over western Kansas, with above average temperatures over eastern Kansas. The past 30 days, well above average temperatures were noted statewide. Summary of Drought Impacts Hydrologic Impacts The city of Wichita and surrounding communities have enacted stage 2 water restrictions. Stage 3 water restrictions will be discussed if Cheney’s water level reaches 50% full or lower. Agricultural Impacts Refer to the USDA for the latest agricultural impacts. Fire Hazard Impacts There are no known impacts at this time. Mitigation Actions Please refer to your municipality and/or water provider for mitigation information. Hydrologic Conditions and Impacts Most streamflows the past 7 days have been near to above average, although portions of western and northern Kansas saw below average streamflows. Agricultural Impacts Near to above average soil moisture was noted across Kansas, highest over generally the western half of Kansas. Soil moisture has dramatically increased across the state the past month. Fire Hazard Impacts through December The risk for significant wildland fire potential across Kansas is average through December. Seven Day Precipitation Forecast Additional widespread heavy rainfall is forecast across much of Kansas through November 21st, with widespread amounts exceeding 1-2 inches likely. November Precipitation and Temperature Outlook Above average precipitation is favored across Kansas in November, especially central and eastern portions. There is a slight signal for above average temperatures statewide. Precipitation and Temperature Outlook through January There is a slight signal for below average precipitation across mainly southwest Kansas through January, with above average temperatures favored statewide. Drought Outlook Through January Through January, areas of drought persistence are forecast across portions of the western half of Kansas, with drought improvement and elimination expected over portions of the eastern half.
