U.S. Drought Monitor Drought intensity and Extent D2 (Severe Drought): There are small pockets of D2 drought across Kiowa, Pratt, Barber and Grant counties. Recent Change in Drought Intensity Four Week Drought Monitor Class Change. Drought Improved: Parts of Hodgeman, Ness and Rush counties. No worsened: Parts of Kiowa, Barber and Pratt counties. Precipitation It was drier than average across parts of southwest Kansas. However, a pocket of wetter than average conditions was noted across parts of central Kansas. Temperatures Temperatures were near to slightly above average across central and southwestern Kansas. Summary of Impacts Agricultural Impacts There are some isolated, limited impacts across parts of south central Kansas where recent rains have been lacking. Seven Day Precipitation Forecast Widespread rains will occur tonight (Thursday night), but dry weather is forecast starting Friday 30 August. Long-Range Outlooks Below average precipitation is forecast for September. Above average temperatures are expected for September. Drought Outlook Small areas of D2 drought will persist and could become more widespread. But heavy rains at the end of August may put any degradation on hold for a few weeks.
