Local Weather History For December 9th...
2012 (9th-10th): On the heels of a strong cold front early in the morning on the 9th, an upper disturbance swung across
the South Plains from northern New Mexico accompanied by a very narrow, but at times heavy snow band. Measuring barely 40
miles wide, this band of snow raced eastward from the western South Plains and into the Rolling Plains between 9:30 PM and
2 AM. Even with mild ground temperatures, periods of moderate to heavy snow left a light coating generally around
1/2" over much of the South Plains (including many roads) with up to one inch of snow measured in Muleshoe. Areas off
the Caprock only received a light dusting. In the wake of the snow, frigid low temperatures in the single digits and teens
caused hazardous travel conditions for motorists heading to work Monday morning the 10th. Icy roads and unsafe motorists
combined to create at least 26 vehicle accidents, mostly in Lubbock. West of Reese Center on Highway 114, a 56 year old
woman was killed when here minivan lost control on ice and rolled in a ditch. A passenger in the minivan suffered moderate
injuries and required hospitalization.
