Another day of Wind for West Texas

Yet another in a train of strong late November winter storms affected West Texas on the final day of the month. Similar to the system just four day earlier, this one tracked well to the north of the region, dumping heavy snow through much of the Rockies and then into the upper Midwest. On the south side of the system, strong westerly winds raked the South Plains region, complete with areas of blowing dust.

Peak wind gusts recorded by the West Texas Mesonet (WTM) on 30 November 2019. The maximum sustained winds observed by the WTM can be VIEWED HERE.

Wind gusts of 50 to 60+ mph were common across the southern Texas Panhandle and much of the South Plains from around midday through mid-afternoon, before gradually decreasing. A peak wind gust of 63 mph was recorded by the West Texas Mesonet sites near Olton, Plainview and Caprock Canyons State Park.

In addition to lofting dust, the intense winds also knocked down a power pole and tossed a storage shed into a power line in Lubbock. A listing of the preliminary storm reports for this windy day can be found below:
