Record setting temperatures in May, 2018

The Texas South Plains were not alone in experiencing record heat in May. Much of West Texas experienced the hottest May on record. The record heat extended from the South Plains through the Midwest to the middle Atlantic Coast. The map below shows the swath of record setting temperatures across the nation.

On a state-by-state basis, Texas had their second-hottest May on record. As can be seen in the image below, almost every state had a top 5 hottest May. The average temperatures across the entire county (lower 48) was the hottest ever recorded in the month of May (not shown).
