...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 04/01/13 TORNADO EVENT...

.OVERVIEW...

A SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM SPAWNED A TORNADO MONDAY AFTERNOON APRIL 1ST
A FEW MILES SOUTHEAST OF SILVERTON, TX IN THE SOUTHERN PANHANDLE. THERE
WAS PHOTOGRAPHIC AND VIDEO EVIDENCE OF A WEAK TORNADO THAT QUICKLY DEVELOPED
AND MOVED APPROXIMATELY 2.5 MILES ACROSS OPEN FARMLAND. THE TORNADO
WAS ON THE GROUND FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES...AND DAMAGED A CENTER
PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEM AND SNAPPED SEVERAL WOODEN POWER POLES. WINDS
NEAR THE TORNADIC CIRCULATION ALSO DESTROYED THE ROOF OF A BARN. THE
TORNADO HAS BEEN RATED EF-1 WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF 109 MPH.

SURVEY SUMMARY: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS FROM THE
LUBBOCK/TX OFFICE SURVEYED THE DAMAGE ON APRIL 2...2013. THE TEAM
FOUND DAMAGE TO A BARN...A CENTER PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEM...AND
NUMEROUS DAMAGED AND DESTROYED WOODEN POWER POLES. AN EF RATING
IS DIFFICULT WITH LIMITED DAMAGE INDICATORS BUT THE EVIDENCE
SUPPORTS HIGH END EF-1 WINDS OF 109 MPH. SOME OF THE DAMAGE
OUTSIDE THE TORNADO TRACK WAS LIKELY CAUSED BY THE BROADER
MESOCYCLONIC CIRCULATION INCLUDING RFD /REAR FLANK DOWNDRAFT/
WINDS A FEW HUNDRED YARDS TO THE SOUTH OF THE TORNADO TRACK...WITH
WINDS IN THE 70-85 MPH RANGE.
