A BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIRMASS BROUGHT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURES
AND WIND CHILL VALUES TO THE SOUTH PLAINS REGION EARLY WEDNESDAY
MORNING. TEMPERATURES FELL BELOW 0 DEGREES IN MOST AREAS NORTH AND
WEST OF LUBBOCK. THE COLDEST READINGS OCCURRED AT FRIONA AND
DIMMITT...WHERE A MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF -4 DEGREES WAS OBSERVED.
THE OFFICIAL LOW AT THE LUBBOCK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS 2
DEGREES...BUT THE MERCURY DROPPED TO 0 DEGREES AT THE NWS OFFICE
AT THE SCIENCE SPECTRUM IN THE CITY. THE READING OF 2 DEGREES AT
THE LUBBOCK AIRPORT WAS THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE OBSERVED THERE
SINCE DECEMBER 1989. ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE ROLLING PLAINS AND
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE SOUTH PLAINS...LOWS RANGED BETWEEN 1
AND 6 DEGREES.

THE COMBINATION OF THE BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES AND BREEZY
NORTHERLY WINDS RESULTED IN DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES
TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. READINGS BETWEEN -20 TO -30
DEGREES WERE COMMON ACROSS AREAS TO THE NORTH AND WEST OF LUBBOCK.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE ROLLING PLAINS AND SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE
SOUTH PLAINS...READINGS BETWEEN -10 TO -20 DEGREES WERE OBSERVED.
