This major tornadic event is often cited as having the longest path length of any tornado (293 miles in Illinois and Indiana for 7 hours and 20 minutes). There is overwhelming evidence that this long track was made up of at least 4 and probably 8 or more individual tornadoes. The first tornado touched down 2 miles E of Nebo and moved due E into Greene County. This tornado killed at total of 101 people and injured 638. The maximum intensity was in Mattoon. |

The Annada, MO tornado, which crossed Calhoun County, IL, then continued NE crossing into southeastern Pike County, IL west of Bee Creek. The tornado downed hundreds of trees as it tracked northeast to near Pearl. Here, part of the roof of a company was blown off causing at least $150,000 in damage. One home suffered roof damage, a barn was destroyed and several outbuildings damaged. At another home, windows on 3 sides were blown out and a trampoline was blown about 300 feet away. |

After forming on the north side of Louisiana, MO, a tornado crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois and first caused damage to a boat dock along US 54. The tornado tracked NE along US 54 destroying a barn and downing trees. The damage along the rest of the path was somewhat intermittent. Trees were downed and an occasional farm building damaged. Significant damage was noted as the tornado tracked NE from Pittsfield. Just east of Pittsfield, two farms suffered damage. Three barns were destroyed, an equipment building heavily damaged and a grain bin destroyed. About 5 miles ENE of Pittsfield a home lost part of its roof and numerous trees were damaged. The last area of significant damage in Pike County was NE of Detroit. One home lost its roof, a barn was destroyed and 2 grain bins damaged. Numerous large trees in this area were snapped off at the base. |

A small tornado formed east of Independence in a rural area and snapped and uprooted a few trees. Between 5:16 and 5:20 pm CST a witness observed 3 small funnel clouds rotating around a larger funnel cloud as it moved northeast past Independence. However there was no visible debris and no damage was found. |

The first Pike County tornado touched down 1.2 miles south of Barry, at the intersection of 1850N and 1750E. The tornado damaged a house at this location that was made of prefabricated panels of compressed Styrofoam insulation. The roof was completely lifted off with some of the panels being deposited 250 yards to the north. The entire north wall fell away from the structure. Debris was scattered across an open field up to one mile to the northeast. At this location, the tornado was 100 yards wide and produced F0 damage. Further to the northeast along the track on 1900N, several outbuildings were damaged and a two foot diameter walnut tree was blown over. The residence had minor shingle, siding and trim damage. The tornado was 200 yards wide and produced F0 damage at this location. The tornado continued northeast 3.5 miles toward Hadley, crossing I-72 near mile marker 22. Along this portion of the track, the tornado caused minor exterior damage to residences and produced minor tree damage. The tornado ranged from 50 to 100 yards wide and produced F0 damage. In Hadley, a two story brick home sustained extensive damage. The roof was lifted off and destroyed. The back half of the second story was completely demolished. Extensive tree damage also occurred. A grain wagon and auger were tipped over. A barn lost some of its tin roof and two wooden telephone poles were leaning east. Debris was scattered northeast for about half a mile. At this location, the tornado was 150 yards wide and produced F1 damage. The tornado dissipated one mile northeast of Hadley. |

The second Pike County tornado touched down 1 mile south southeast of Baylis, just west of County road 2500E. The tornado moved northeast and damaged a barn on road 2500E about a half mile south of County Road 2200N. The barn lost some roof and siding panels. At this location, the tornado was 75 yards wide and produced F0 damage. The tornado continued to the northeast and damaged 2 houses and a barn on 2200N about a mile east of Baylis. One of the homes was missing half of its shingles on the south side of the roof and the other home sustained minor shingle and trim damage. Several large evergreen trees were snapped off and a barn was destroyed. The tornado was 250 yards wide and produced F1 damage at this location. The tornado continued northeast and damaged a barn on County Road 2700E, about 2 miles northeast of Baylis. Debris from the barn was scattered 100 yards to the northeast. At this location, the tornado was 50 yards wide and produced F0 damage. The tornado dissipated just northeast of this location. |

A tornado touched down 1.7 miles west southwest of Perry off of Township Road 3225E. It travelled to the east northeast with intermittent touchdowns occurring until the tornado reached the southern portion of Perry. On the south side of Perry, a vacant mobile home had its roof and northwest corner ripped off. Another mobile home had a tree land on it causing extensive damage and two children in the home sustained minor cuts and bruises. Also, 3 homes sustained window and shingle damage, a barn lost part of its roof, and numerous trees and tree limbs were blown down. Two vehicles sustained damage from fallen tree limbs. The tornado then lifted and dissipated.A strong cold front moved through the region, triggering strong to severe thunderstorms during the evening hours. |

This tornado formed about 1 mile north of I-72 near mile marker 31. The tornado initially damaged trees, then moved east and destroyed a machine shed about 1/2 mile north of County Roads 1900N and 2800E. Debris from the machine shed was thrown over 1/2 mile to the east and northeast.Late afternoon and evening severe thunderstorms triggered by a northward moving warm front produced hail, wind damage, a couple of small tornadoes, and localized flash flooding across West Central and Southwest Illinois. |
