Day1...

1892: The lowest temperature on record at Columbia for the month of July (45 degrees) was recorded.

1966: In Jefferson county, a severe thunderstorm produced winds of up to 57mph (50kts).

Day2...

1952: The 5th highest wind occurrence for St. Louis (75mph) was recorded.

1992: Severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds over much of the area as well as two tornadoes causing F1 damage. In Audrain county, the wind topped out at 97mph (84kts).

Day3...

A severe thunderstorm blew into downtown St. Louis during the Fair St. Louis 4th of July celebration causing an estimated 200,000 people to scurry for shelter. The wind and hail blew down tree branches, billboards, and destroyed numerous vendor booths set up on the Gateway Arch grounds for the Fair.

Day4...

1984: Between the 3rd and the 4th, a total of 5.05 inches of rain fell at Columbia. This is the 9th greatest 24-hour total amount of precipitation for that location.

1985: In Monroe county in Missouri, hail measuring up to 4.5 inches in diameter was produced by a severe thunderstorm.

2005: A multi-cellular storm becoming linear moved across the central county warning area with the inital threat being large hail. The threat then changed to damaging winds. A tornado touchdown occurred along with widespread wind damage and some minor flooding. More information can be found  in our events archives.

Day5...

1975: Severe thunderstorms produced high winds through much of the area, as well as large hail in some counties. In St. Louis, winds were measured at 70mph (61 kts) and in Washington county in Illinois, hail measuring up to 2.75 inches in diameter caused damage to many cars and roofs.

2004: Severe thunderstorms tore through southern Illinois producing strong winds in much of the eastern CWA. In St. Clair county, winds were measured at up to 86mph (75kts).

1972: The lowest temperature on record at St. Louis for the month of July (51 degrees) was recorded.

1987: In St. Clair county, hail measuring up to 3.5 inches in diameter was produced by a severe thunderstorm. In St. Louis, falling hail measured up to 2 inches in diameter.

1942: Between the 8th and the 9th, a total of 6.94 inches of rain fell in St. Louis. This is the 3rd greatest 24-hour total amount of precipitation for St. Louis.

Day10...

1971: Severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds and even a tornado causing F1 damage in Warren county.

1992: In Osage and Cole counties, winds measuring up to 70mph (61kts) were measured in association with severe thunderstorms.

1969: A severe thunderstorm produced damaging winds (57mph/50kts) in Madison county in Illinois.

Day12...

1995: A heat wave characterized by temperatures ranging from the middle 90s to near 100 and dew points in the upper 70s and low 80s produced heat indices in the 110 to 120 range. Heat related illnesses occurred but no deaths were reported in the south part of central Missouri.

1979: In St. Louis, severe winds of up to 60mph (52kts) and hail measuring up to 2.5 inches in diameter were produced by a severe thunderstorm.

1954: The all time highest temperature on record at St. Louis (115 degrees) and Columbia (113 degrees) were recorded. Missouri's all time record high of 118 degrees at Warsaw and Union was recorded on the same day.

1950: The lowest temperature on record at Quincy for the month of July (47 degrees) was recorded.

1936: The all time highest temperature on record at Quincy (114 degrees) was recorded.

1971: In Gasconade county, hail measuring up to 3.0 inches in diameter was produced by a severe thunderstorm.

1992: Severe thunderstorms produced high winds of up to 60mph (52kts) in Randolph and St. Clair counties in Illinois.

Day17...

1977: In Madison county in Illinois, severe winds of up to 75mph (65kts) were associated with severe thunderstorm activity.

2012: A historic heat wave occurred in the area bringing temperatures and heat index values over 100 degrees for 10 days. More information can be found in our events archives.

Day18...

1934: From the 18th through the 25th, there were 8 consecutive days on which temperatures reached at least 100 degrees. This is the 3rd longest streak.

2003: A hail swath was found in eastern Montgomery, southwest Shelby, and northern Fayette counties in Illinois. Most of the hail was 1.00 to 1.50 inches but some areas saw hail as large as 2.54 inches. The swath was 2 to 3 inches deep and destroyed 19,000 acres of crops. Day19...

1956: A severe thunderstorm produced hail up to 3 inches in diameter in Audrain county.

2006: A severe wind storm moved through the St. Louis metro area from the northeast causing widespread wind damage to trees and some structural damage.   Power outages were extensive.  More information can be found in our events archives.

Day20...

1971: In Randolph county, hail measuring up to 3.0 inches in diameter was produced by a severe thunderstorm. The thunderstorms also produced winds of up to 77mph.

2010: Several rounds of thunderstorms brought heavy rain that resulted in flash flooding across northeast MIssouri and west-central Illinois. Up to 7 inches of rain fell. In Hannibal, there were 40 water rescues. Unfortunately, there was one fatality. More information can be found  in our events archives.

Day21...

1961: In Adams county, a tornado causing F1 damage was produced by a severe thunderstorm. The total damage was estimated around a quarter of a million dollars.

2006: A bow echo moved across the St. Louis Metro Area into central Illinois producing extreme damaging winds along with tornadoes. Power outages rose to about 500,000. More information can be found  in our events archives.

2010: In St. Louis City, Mo and East St. Louis, IL, slow moving thunderstorms dropped 4 inches of rainfall in less than 2 hours causing flash flooding. Portions of two interstates were closed due to the event. More information can be found  in our events archives.

Day22...

2002: A lighting strike caused a fire which destroyed a 2 story home in an unincorporated area of St. Louis County just west of Ballwin. No one was home at the time of the fire. Total damage was $200 thousand.

Day23...

1981: Severe thunderstorms caused high winds in much of the CWA. In St. Clair county, winds topped out at 67mph (58kts) and in Boone county in Missouri, winds were measured as high as 69mph (60kts).

1977: Severe thunderstorms caused high winds over much of the CWA. The highest winds were experienced in St. Louis and measured 81mph (70kts)

Day25...

1988: High winds measuring up to 70mph (61kts) and large hail measuring up to 2.5 inches in diameter were produced by severe thunderstorms in the CWA.

1987: In Clinton county, severe winds of up to 74mph (64kts) were produced by a severe thunderstorm.

Day27...

1953: From the 27th through August 2nd, there were 7 days when temperatures reached at least 100 degrees in St. Louis. This is a tie for the 4th longest streak.

2008: A supercell moved across eastern Boone County and west-central Callaway County. Evidence showed a widespread downburst moved across the area with some embedded microbursts. An EF-0 tornado was also produced by this storm. More information can be found  in our events archives.

Day28...

1976: A severe thunderstorm produced a tornado causing F3 damage in Madison county in Illinois. It destroyed 11 homes, two churches, and a school in the western part of New Douglas and was responsible for 3 deaths and 30 injuries.

1989: 5.95 inches of rain fall at Columbia. This is the 4th greatest 24-hour total amount of precipitation for that location.

Day31...

Severe thunderstorms affected much of the CWA. In Pike county in Missouri, hail measuring up to 2.75 inches in diameter was produced. Elsewhere, severe winds (57mph/50kts) were common.

2008: July was a very wet month with monthly rainfall totals doubling the norm in much of the county warning area. In St. Louis, the normal precipitation amount for July is 3.78 inches but we received 7.65 inches. More information can be found in our events archives.
