1993: The Mississippi River at St. Louis crested at 49.6 feet on August 1, nearly 20 feet above flood stage and had a peak flow rate of 1.08 Million cubic feet per second. At this rate, a bowl the size of Busch Stadium would be filled to the brim in 69 seconds.

2003: A lightning strike started a fire that destroyed the roof of a building that houses several businesses in St. Charles.

Day2...

2001: Several thunderstorms dropped heavy rain across the eastern part of Lewis County causing flash flooding. Local law enforcement reported numerous roads covered with water and impassable.

1930: From the 3rd through the 9th, there were 7 days when temperatures reached at least 100 degrees in St. Louis. This is the 4th longest streak.

1967: In Clinton county, hail measuring up to 3.0 inches in diameter was produced by a severe thunderstorm.

Day5...

1961: Severe thunderstorms produced large hail in several counties. In Madison county (MO) and Pike county (IL), hail measuring up to 1.75 inches in diameter was reported. The largest reported hail fell in St. Clair county in Illinois and measured 2 inches in diameter.

2008: A storm system formed over northeast Missouri and moved southeast just north of the St. Louis area. Widespread wind damage occured with many embedded microbursts. The microbursts had winds as strong as 75 mph. Witnesses reported high winds lasting for 3 to 5 minutes. More information can be found in our events archives.

1985: In Jefferson county, severe thunderstorms produced winds of up to 57mph (50kts) and hail measuring up to 1.75 inches in diameter.

Day7...

1999: A downburst caused extensive damage to several businesses in a strip mall on the west side of Jefferson City. A furniture store lost its roof resulting in the loss of almost all of the inventory inside, and a large department store sustained partial roof, window and door damage. Several trees were also blown down across town with some vehicle damaged by the fallen trees.

1934: The highest temperatures on record at St. Louis (110 degrees), Quincy (111 degrees) and Columbia (110 degrees) for the month of August were recorded.

1975: 6 inches of rain that fell in 3 hours helped to ease a drought that had lasted two months in Osage county.

1934: The highest temperature on record at Columbia for the month of August (110 degrees) is recorded.

1974: Severe thunderstorms produced tornadoes in Madison and Montgomery counties in Illinois. In Montgomery county, the tornado produced F2 damage destroying a brick garage and a chicken house, and uprooting a tree while passing through a cemetery.

2010: Damage to trees, power lines, and homes was reported due to a severe thunderstorm that generated a microburst in Wentzville, Mo. More information can be found in our events archives.

1965: In Franklin county (MO), a tornado causing F1 damage was produced by a severe thunderstorm. It touched down briefly at airport, damaging several planes and a hangar. One plane was carried 100 feet in the air and deposited 200 yards away.

1974: A severe thunderstorm produced hail measuring up to 2 inches in diameter in Bond county (IL).

2012: Hurricane Issac brought widespread rainfall that lasted for a few days. The heaviest rainfall amounts were in northeast Missouri and central Illinois where 3 to 7 inches of rain fell.
