High pressure is building over the area this week, bringing significant heat to SW California. The heat will increase through the week, peaking on Friday and Saturday. Highs from the coastal valleys to the deserts are expected to be between 96 to 116 degrees by late week, resulting in a high risk of heat-related illnesses. High temperatures across the coastal plain will be lower, but still climbing into the 82 to 92 degree range late in the week. Overnight low temperatures will also remain quite warm, exacerbating the excessive heat conditions. There will also be elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions this week, due to the hot temperatures and low relative humidity. Rapid fire spread will be likely any new fire starts. Use extra caution in the heat, and with any source of spark or flame!
Elevated surf and strong ocean currents will bring dangers to the beaches during the holiday heat wave. Stay off the dangerous rocks and always swim only near a lifeguard.
A long-duration heat wave will bring very hot and dry conditions to SW California through the weekend. The hot and dry conditions will coincide with northwesterly winds, gusting 25 to 40 mph, Thursday evening through Friday night across the Interstate 5 Corridor as well as southern Santa Barbara County, and the interior mountains of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. This combination will bring critical fire weather conditions to these areas Thursday evening through late Friday night. Otherwise, elevated fire weather conditions will continue for all areas away from the immediate coast through much of next week.
