  • During the afternoon and evening of March 10, several intense supercell thunderstorms moved across northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana.
    • ​A supercell is a thunderstorm that has persistent and deep rotation.
  • One supercell was responsible for a family of tornadoes across Livingston and Kankakee counties in Illinois, and Newton, Jasper, and Starke counties in northwestern Indiana.
  • NWS survey crews on March 11th confirmed preliminary ratings for two tornadoes in our area of responsibility. Additional survey and event analysis will continue over the coming days.​
    • An EF3 that tracked from just west of Aroma Park, IL to Lake Village, IN before ending near DeMotte, IN.
    • An EF1 that tracked from southwest of Wheatfield to near Dunns Bridge, IN
  • A Tornado Watch was in effect before the tornadoes occurred. Based on preliminary reports, Tornado Warnings were also in effect before each tornado occurred. A rare Level 4 out of 5 threat level for tornadoes was issued by the Storm Prediction Center prior to thunderstorms developing.
  • The supercell thunderstorms also produced exceptionally large hail. The same storm that produced all of the tornadoes in our area also produced hail ranging in size from 3 to locally 5 inches in diameter. A hailstone with a diameter of 6.0" was measured in Kankakee, IL.
    • ​This 6.0" hailstone may be considered for a new Illinois state record hailstone. The previous record was a hailstone measuring 4.75" in diameter that fell in Minooka in June of 2015.
    • There is a process to verify the hailstone, so this report is considered unofficial at this time.
  • Another supercell moved across the southern and western Chicago metropolitan area and dropped hail ranging in size from 2 to locally 4 inches in diameter across Bolingbrook, Woodridge, Downers Grove, Westmont, and Darien. The largest hailstone measured in this area was 4.8" in diameter and occurred in Darien, IL.

Meteorology and Environment

Surface pressure analysis at 6 PM showing a deep area of low pressure around 100 mb across northern Missouri.  MLCAPE, or an estimate of the amount of fuel available to thunderstorms at 6 PM. Values of 2000-3000 J/kg are present near and south of a warm front, supportive of intense thunderstorms.  The amount of fuel available above the surface. Numerous thunderstorms developed north of a shallow warm front, drawing warm/moist air in from above the above the ground (temperatures at the surface were in the 40s, while they were near 70 above the top of the Sears Tower!)
Deep layer wind shear, or how much winds change direction or increase in speed with height. Values over 50 kts were supportive of deep, rotating updrafts (supercells).  Similar to the image to the left, but for wind shear near the ground. Values near 30-35 kts are very strong, supporting low-level updraft rotation and organization.  Storm-relative inflow winds, or the winds the storm updraft "feels" (storm motion is subtracted out). Values >= 30 kts were present which is exceptionally strong for our area. This likely helped storm updrafts become much larger than typical, aiding in the development of extreme hail.
