Snow Across the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast; Unsettled Weather in the West

Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Colder temperatures are in store for the weekend from the Great Lakes to East Coast. Read More >

Meteorological Setup

Moist southwest flow in the upper atmosphere has been parked across the central  U.S. since midweek.  On May 3rd, this helped to produce multiple rounds of severe storms across the Midwest.  Northern Illinois began to clear following morning and early afternoon cloud cover.  Temperatures warmed in the lower to mid 80s, the warmest in six weeks across many area communities.  The combination of this low-level warmth and moisture aided in strong instability over the area.  By late afternoon, with the help of convergence along a subtle frontal boundary oriented just north of the Illinois River, the instability began to be tapped by developing storms.  The satellite imagery below depicts the towering cumulus and scattered thunderstorm tops.  Note the "bubbling" thunderstorm top in northeast Illinois near O'Hare International Airport (ORD), reflecting a rapidly growing updraft.  This was the first of multiple severe and heavy-rain producing storms that would train from west to east across that area.  The significant instability allowed thunderstorms to explosively develop to well above the -20°C level, an often favorable threshold for large hail.  The deep moisture in the atmosphere, as seen below on the precipitable water analysis, favored the storms to produce heavy rainfall.  The somewhat diffuse surface features as indicated on the surface analysis helped the storms to propagate at a somewhat slow speed to further aid in heavy rainfall.

The combination of the storms being well-organized and containing ice aloft and an overall high density of precipitation, likely aided in frequent lightning within these storms.  Below is an image of the cloud-to-ground lightning strikes between midnight and 1 am on the morning of May 4th, with a total of over 3,300!

Radar

6 pm - 9 pm:   0.5° KLOT Radar Loop  (~9 MB)

Radar Loop

This loop shows the multiple supercellular thunderstorms that developed across northern DuPage and Cook Counties, including over O'Hare International Airport.  A few of these storms even had anti-cyclonic rotation in the mid-levels, a generally rarer trait than cyclonic rotation, however still a sign of a deep well-organized storm.  Most of the storms in this train of activity were severe and produced very heavy rainfall.

8:39 pm:   KLOT Radar Image at ~30,000 ft

Radar

This high angle image depicts nearly 70 dBZ to 30,000 ft, along with a likely three-body scatter spike, a direct sign of large hail aloft with this storm.  It would produce quarter to golf ball size hail from west to east across Harwood Heights through 9 pm.

8:53 pm:   3.4° KLOT Radar Imagery at ~9,500 ft

Radar

Occasionally the KLOT dual-polarization data indicated likely large hail in the storms across northern Cook County.  This included during the image above.  Correlating with the high dBZ to the left are several pixels of very low differential reflectivity (which is an element that basically tells about the shape and orientation of the radar scatterers).  These very low values within a storm core indicate tumbling, randomly-oriented hail stones.

1:03 am:  KLOT 0.5° Reflectivity

1:03 am:  KLOT 0.5° Velocity

Reflectivity

Velocity

A well-organized area of wind-producing storms ahead of a developing mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) swept east across Livingston County in the early morning hours of May 4th.  The velocity image on the right indicate speeds of ~70 mph at 4,000 ft.  Accounting for the radar perspective of this, the velocities measured by the radar actually were more on the order of ~90 mph.  Wind damage occurred at the ground within this area, and a 64 mph gust was measured at Pontiac Airport.
