A National Weather Service Damage Assessment Team surveyed the storm damage in Delacroix, LA. It has been determined the damage was the result of a tornado. The tornado has been rated an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Damage estimates were consistent with winds of 105 mph. The tornado touched down on Bayou Terre Au Beoufs and Highway 300 near the vacant Delacroix Government Complex - a three story former school building. This building had the top two floors removed, and total collapse of the north and east facing brick veneer walls. The first floor remained intact. A recreational vehicle parked in a small RV park adjacent to the complex was overturned. The tornado proceeded to move in a SSE direction to the north of Highway 300 across a marshy field behind a series of camp houses. The tornado would impact another series of RVs - rolling or lifting two of them for 45 to 50 yards. The roof of one was blown 100 yards from the originating location into the back of a raised camp. Two other trailers were flipped. Other minor damage included several pieces of roofing tin removed and strewn across fields and the highway. Some debris was lodged onto moored shrimp boats in Bayou Terre Au Beoufs. Some crab traps were displaced and a small tree was snapped near the base. The damage was confined to a rather narrow path and some hail pelting on vinyl siding was noted on some structures. |
