National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Our goal in negotiations is, quite simply, to advance the mission, science and success of the National Weather Service and its employees in doing the critical work that saves lives and property.

Why change? Because the contract was last negotiated in 2001, following the last "modernization" effort in the 1990s. The current agreement no longer reflects current law and regulation, and in many cases fails to support the way the National Weather Service needs to evolve to meet our mission.

We hope to reach agreement on a new contract that serves employees better by helping the National Weather Service expand its services and abilities and better meet the needs of our partners in and outside of government.

At core, we want to build into the contract:

  • Opportunities for employees to specialize according to their skills and partner needs
  • The flexibility to align our operating hours to those of our partners
  • The ability to ensure employees spend time where it matters most
