Overview
A potent winter squall line blasted across southeast Georgia and northeast Florida on February 6, 2020 during the late afternoon through just after midnight February 7, 2020. This system produced widespread severe wind damage across the entire forecast area and an isolated weak tornado in Waycross, GA. |

Wind
Significant wind damage occurred with this storm system. Non-thunderstorm wind gusts of 35-45 mph were common ahead of the main squall line during the afternoon which produced scattered reports of wind damage including trees down and power lines down across the forecast area. On the 18z JAX Special Sounding RAOB, 850 mb winds were near 60 kts (about 5000 agl) and 925 mb winds were near 35 kts. Not only did the low level pressure gradient increase to produce sustained surface winds of 20-30 mph, but the strong winds above the surface mixed down during the day as temperatures warmed to near record values under a strong warm air advection pattern.
Widespread winds within the squall line gusted between 40-50 mph, with bowing segments producing wind gusts of 60-80 mph. Numerous reports of tree and power line damage were reported with this squall line, with pockets of heavier damage where severe strength winds occurred which include large areas of trees down and structural damage.

Environment
The large-scale pattern set up the conditions necessary for a potent winter squall line to develop and move through the region. A strong mid to upper level trough was diving south from the mid-Mississippi valley southward to the northwest and central Gulf coast regions on Thursday February 6, 2020. This upper level feature was helping to support a strengthening low-pressure center over the Tennessee Valley with minimum pressure near 999 mb on the WPC 12 Z analysis with a warm front positioned along the mid-Atlantic states and a cold front extending south and west towards the gulf coast near Mobile, AL and continuing into the Gulf of Mexico. Warm moist air flowed ahead of this cold front thanks to very strong low-level jet winds of 60 to 70 knots near the 850 mb level (seen in the Storm Predication Center’s 12Z Upper Air analysis), allowing surface dewpoints to rise into the mid to upper 60s throughout southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida as the day progressed into the afternoon and evening hours ahead of the Severe Squall Line.

Mesoanalysis
Evidence of a strongly sheared environment were present in the 18Z Jacksonville upper air sounding. The sounding observed 60 knots of winds near the top of the boundary layer at 850 mb and a curved hodograph above 1 km off the surface. The surface to 1 km surface relative helicity (SRH) values were already impressive at over 300 m2/s2 and despite overall weak elevated lapse rates less than 6.5 C/km, about 1,500 J/kg of surface-based Cape helped to provide enough instability for severe thunderstorm winds to occur and possibly for a tornado. Mesoscale Discussion #0091 issued just before 12Z discussed a very high probability for a tornado watch for interior Southeast Georgia for damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes as the line of thunderstorms move progressed from Alabama eastward to Georgia. This was followed with Tornado watch 29 at 1720Z over those areas mentioned.
Figure 5: Jacksonville 18Z Upper Air Sounding |
Figure 6: SPC Mesoscale Discussion #0091 over SE GA at 12Z | Figure 7: Tornado Watch #437 issued at 1720Z February 6, 2020 | Figure 8: SPC 18Z Mesoanalysis of Surface to 1 km SRH |
A new Mesoscale Discussion update was issued at 1830Z as the storms moved closer towards Northeast Florida and coastal Southeast Georgia. The update mentioned the increasing linear nature of the convective mode of the storms with the greatest tornado threat moving into East Central Georgia and South Carolina where more discrete storm cells and low level backed winds resided. At 21Z, the Storm Predication Center's Mesoanalysis showed effective bulk shear values peaking near 80 knots over southeast Georgia. These high shear values over lapped with very strong 0-1km SRH values between 300-400 m2/s2 from Waycross south and west into the Suwannee River Valley of Northeast Florida with a peak value of 450 m2/s2 over Tallahassee which were noticeably higher than the 18Z analysis, indicating an increase in low level speed shear (if not directional) just ahead of the line of storms. Given these high values, the possibility of a tornado was still high within the line of storms with severe wind gusts likely to be the main threat as they approached the Waycross area. The line of storms consolidated into a Squall line by 00Z and continued to progress quickly east towards the Gainesville, Jacksonville, and Brunswick areas. The 00Z Jacksonville sounding released before the Squall line's arrival indicated a relatively strait hodograph with over 80 knots of effective bulk shear and high SRH values near 300 m2/s2, but lapse rates generally less than 6.5 C/km. These readings continued to support strait line winds as the predominant storm threat just before the squall line moved through higher population areas. While bowing segments briefly formed as the line passes I-95, they quickly dissipated with the highest wind gust reported during the storms occurring at NAS Jacksonville with 76 mph.
