Environment
A warm front was winding just north of the Florida/Georgia State line on the morning of the 23rd that extended from near Brunswick west into Southeast Alabama and connecting to the occluded surface low over the lower Mississippi River. Meanwhile, a strong southern stream mid level trough was swinging southeast from the mid-Mississippi valley towards the central Gulf coast and the southeastern states. Height falls over the diffluent region downstream of the mid-level trough was providing the synoptic lift that supported ongoing convection over southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Along and north of the warm front over southern Georgia the temperatures were in the 60s with dewpoints in the upper 50s to low 60s with southeast flow at the surface.

Mesoanalysis
The 12Z JAX & TAE WFO soundings reflected very strong 0-6KM Bulk shear values over 60 knots with veering low level wind profiles. A strong low-level jet of 50 knots was observed on Tallahassee’s sounding where SRH values were very robust with values ranging from near 500 to almost 700 m2s2 in close proximity to the warm front as it ebbed northward into Georgia. In addition, soundings from Jacksonville and Tallahassee showed signs of unstable elevated lapse rates around 6.5 C/km.
The storm Prediction center issued a Mesoscale Discussion at 1430Z that included the observed data from these two soundings stating, “A 50 kt southerly low-level jet will migrate through this region in association with progressive shortwave trough and contribute to northward advance of the warm front into the afternoon.” Further stating that dewpoints would rise to the low to mid 60s along with an expectation of MLCAPE values rising to near 1,500 J/Kg as the boundary layer over southern Georgia destabilized. The MCD also noted that, “Vertical wind profiles with 50+ kt effective bulk shear and large low-level hodographs will support organized storms including supercells and bowing segments capable of damaging wind and tornadoes.” And concluded that a Weather watch would be needed by 15Z.
Figure 5: 12Z TLH Sounding April 23, 2020 | Figure 6: 12Z TLH Sounding April 23, 2020 | Figure 7: SPC Mesoscale Discussion #0457 over SE GA & NE FL at 1530Z April 23, 2020 | Figure 8: Tornado Watch #140 issued at 1455Z April 23, 2020 |
Soon afterward, tornado watch #140 was issued at 1455Z for northern Florida and northeast Florida west of Baker county and for southern Georgia areas south of the Altamaha River. At this point, the real question was how unstable would the lower levels become over the next several hours? That question was answered as clouds soon eroded over North Florida and Southern Georgia. Strong surface heating followed during the late morning and midday hours which lead to the rapid destabilization of the of the lower levels of the atmosphere by 16Z over the region. Ongoing convection entering this pool of moist unstable air was primed to strengthen as it moved eastward. A strong bow echo within a line of convection containing embedded supercell characteristics was observed by the Storm Prediction Center in their Mesoscale Discussion update #0459 at 1725Z. This complex would move east just north of the Florida/Georgia State Line with damaging winds, hail and weak tornadoes rolling through Southeast Georgia in the hours that followed.
