Environment
A stationary front in our area, paired with upper-level disturbances passing through resulted in multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms. Hot and humid conditions were favorable for thunderstorms to develop, some of which produced wall clouds and funnel clouds. Heavy rainfall was a result of high precipitable water values and an incredibly moist atmosphere.
Figure 1: 15z (11AM EDT) 25 June. A surface low and associated warm front lifting in began our stretch of wet weather. | Figure 2: 00z 26 June (8 PM EDT 25 June).Nine hours later, a stationary front is seen lingering in our area. This would continue to the focus for additional rain and thunderstorms. | Figure 3: 21z (5 PM EDT) 26 June. Our location in the warm sector of the nearby surface promoted an environment favorable for thunderstorms. An outflow boundary provided a source of lift. |
Figure 4: 6z (2 AM EDT) 26 June. Precipitable water values were near 2" or more. This exceeds the 90th percentile moving average of SPC Sounding Climatology at nearby Detroit, Davenport, Lincoln, IL sounding sites. | Figure 5: 7z (3 AM EDT) 26 June. Dew points at 850mb were 16°C which indicates an incredibly moist low-level environment. | Figure 6: Same as Figure 4, but at 21z (5 PM EDT) 26 June. |
Figure 7: Same as Figure 5, but at 21z (5 PM EDT) 26 June. | Figure 8: 01z (9 PM EDT 25 June) 26 June. A corridor of favorable storm-relative helicity resulted in a few storms producing funnel clouds. Low clouds bases (about 2,500 ft) were beneficial too. | Figure 9: 23z (7 PM EDT) 26 June. CAPE and Bulk shear were both favorable for severe thunderstorms. |
