Overview

A multi-faceted storm brought a wintry mix of rain, snow, and sleet in addition to blustery winds, heavy rain, and flooding to the NWS Northern Indiana forecast area on March 3, 2023.  Precipitation began as mostly rain then gradually became either all snow, or a wintry mix of rain, snow, and sleet.

A few of the highlights:

  • Snow totals ranged from 3 to 8 inches in most locations, highest across far northern Indiana and southern Lower Michigan, and extreme northwest Ohio. The greatest snowfall reported was 10 inches near Jonesville, MI. Farther south and east, totals were 1 to 2 inches or less as these areas received either a rain/snow/sleet mixture or all rain. See the details in the snow tab.
  • Precipitation totals ranged from 1 to 2 inches in many locations, with the highest water-equivalent measurement of 2.74 inches near Ora, IN. There were several reports of flooded roadways, full ditches, and ponding of water on the roads. Many of the area rivers went into minor flood stage. See the precipitation tab or the storm report tab for more details.
  • Wind gusts were as high as 35 to 55 mph, with a few near 60 mph. There were power outages and sporadic damage to trees and/or power lines from the wind combined with saturated soils, and the heavy, wet snow. See the wind tab for a detailed list.
