Snowfall Map

Below is a map of a few storm reports across the region, most of the heavier amounts of snow in excess of 3 inches were confined to far northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

Radar

The environment with this system was favorable for precipitation to orient in bands. This enhanced banding allowed for some of the better snowfall rates late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Warm, most advection across central Indiana resulted in precipitation types remaining primarily as rain across southern portions of the area. Doppler radar can often be used as a tool to help delineate boundaries in precipitation type. This was the case in this event with lower Correlation Coefficient values indicating more of a mix of rain/snow aloft closer to US Route 24. These hydrometeors continued to melt to all rain as they descended through the lowest few thousand feet where temperatures near the surface were warmer.

Environment

A system lifting northeast from the Mid Mississippi Valley allowed for a good deal of warm/moist advection to lift northward across the Ohio Valley. The combination of this approaching system and an elevated frontal boundary in the mid levels of the atmosphere led to a favorable setup for mesoscale snow bands. Thermal and moisture profiles were more supportive of rainfall across southern and northwest portions of the forecast area.
