Environment
Moisture, Lift, Instability, and Wind Shear Are the Ingredients for Severe Weather. Early Friday morning, a pre-frontal moisture axis with precipitable water values of 1.7" or greater dropped southeast across the forecast area (moisture). Storms re-developed along this axis after daybreak Friday, also coincident with the eastward progression of modest low level moisture convergence (lift) with a westerly jet. The low level frontal zone (lift) dropped southward across the area by early afternoon, which finally allowed some southeast progression of convection/storms across the central forecast area. Storms intensified by mid-afternoon across east central Illinois as a stronger upper wave from upper MS valley began to approach the western Great Lakes (lift), with the greatest severe threat positioned across our far south/southwest.

Upscale growth of the morning thunderstorm complex occurred along an old outflow boundary from overnight storms (lift). The greatest instability was across the southwest portions of the area, where surface based CAPE was on the order of 2000-3000 J/Kg by late afternoon. Effective shear (wind shear) also increased into the 35-45 knot range across northwest Indiana by mid afternoon as the upper jet stream approached from the west. Combination of shear and instability allowed for some supercell structure to a few storms across the south and southwest.
