THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE YEAR WAS 47.6 WHICH WAS 2.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 8TH COLDEST YEAR ON RECORD. THE COLDEST YEAR EVER RECORDED WAS 1904 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 45.7 DEGREES. THERE WAS 41.44 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...3.44 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 27TH WETTEST YEAR. SNOWFALL FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR WAS 98.7 INCHES...32.1 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 10TH SNOWIEST CALENDAR YEAR. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPRESSIVE CONSIDERING DECEMBER ONLY ACCOUNTED FOR 0.2 INCHES OF SNOW. BELOW IS A REVIEW OF THE 2014 WEATHER FROM A COMPILATION OF THE MONTHLY SUMMARIES. JANUARY ...EXTREMELY COLD WITH A LOT OF SNOW IN JANUARY AT SOUTH BEND... THE HARSH WINTER FROM 2013 CONTINUED INTO JANUARY WITH RECORD COLD...DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS AND A LOT OF SNOW. JANUARY BEGAN COLD WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD HAVING AVERAGE TEMPERATURES NEARLY 20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS BELOW ZERO. THIS WAS JUST A TEASE OF WHAT WAS ABOUT TO COME A FEW DAYS LATER. ONE OF THE COLDEST OUTBREAKS IN RECENT MEMORY ARRIVED ON THE 6TH IN THE WAKE OF ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SNOWFALLS IN RECENT MEMORY. A STRONG STORM SYSTEM MOVED THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY AND DROPPED BETWEEN 10 AND 18 INCHES OF SNOW ON MANY LOCATIONS ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA AND SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN. THIS STORM WAS ACCOMPANIED BY WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WHICH CREATED BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS IN SOME AREAS. AS THE TEMPERATURE FELL BELOW ZERO ON THE 6TH...WIND CHILLS PLUMMETED TO AROUND 40 BELOW ZERO. LOW TEMPERATURES DROPPED BELOW ZERO FOR 4 CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS BETWEEN THE 6TH AND 9TH. A BRIEF WARMUP OCCURRED BETWEEN THE 10TH AND 13TH AS TEMPERATURES WARMED INTO THE 40S. MORE SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES FOLLOWED THROUGH THE 20TH BEFORE YET ANOTHER PLUNGE OF VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR MADE ITS WAY BACK TO THE REGION. THIS SYSTEM WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SNOW AND VERY STRONG WINDS AS WELL. LOW TEMPERATURES DROPPED TO 14 BELOW ZERO AT SOUTH BEND ON THE 28TH AND WIND CHILLS ONCE AGAIN DROPPED TO NEAR 35 BELOW ZERO. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 16.3 DEGREES...8.1 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 9TH COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THERE WERE 10 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING BELOW ZERO. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 45 ON THE 13TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 14 BELOW ZERO ON THE 6TH AND 28TH. THE COLDEST DAY OF THE MONTH WAS JANUARY 7TH WITH A HIGH OF 1 AND A LOW OF 13 BELOW ZERO. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THIS DAY WAS 6 BELOW ZERO...WHICH WAS 31 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. JANUARY 28TH WAS A CLOSE SECOND WITH A HIGH OF 2 AND A LOW OF 14 BELOW FOR AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 6 BELOW ZERO...30 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 3.12 INCHES...0.95 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 29TH WETTEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION WAS 0.92 INCHES ON THE 10TH AND 11TH. HOWEVER...IT WAS A VERY SNOWY MONTH. WHILE OFFICIAL SNOWFALL RECORDS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOUTH BEND AIRPORT...UNOFFICIAL REPORTS FROM OTHER WEATHER OBSERVERS INDICATED ABOUT 46.6 INCHES OF SNOW HAD FALLEN IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA IN JANUARY. THIS WOULD RANK AROUND THE 3RD SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THE VERY COLD AIR IS THE REASON THAT SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WERE SO HIGH DESPITE ONLY 3.12 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION BEING MEASURED. FEBRUARY ...ANOTHER VERY COLD MONTH WITH ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION... FEBRUARY CONTINUED A STREAK OF MONTHS WITH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA. THIS WAS THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH WITH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES...AND IT WAS ALSO THE COLDEST MONTH OF THE WINTER SEASON. IT WAS ALSO ANOTHER VERY SNOWY MONTH BASED ON VOLUNTEER WEATHER OBSERVER REPORTS FROM AROUND THE REGION. THE OVERALL WINTER WEATHER PATTERN THAT HAS KEPT THE CENTRAL UNITED STATES VERY COLD CONTINUED INTO FEBRUARY. THERE WAS A BRIEF BREAKDOWN DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH AND THIS ALLOWED TEMPERATURES TO BRIEFLY WARM ABOVE NORMAL. HOWEVER...THIS REPRIEVE FROM THE DEEP FREEZE WAS SHORT LIVED AS VERY COLD AIR RETURNED FOR THE END OF THE MONTH. THERE WERE ONLY 5 DAYS IN FEBRUARY WITH A DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ABOVE NORMAL...AND 4 OF THESE DAYS OCCURRED IN A ROW BETWEEN THE 18TH AND 21ST. THE ONLY OTHER ABOVE NORMAL DAY WAS THE FIRST. THE WARMEST DAY OCCURRED ON THE 20TH WITH A HIGH OF 49...A LOW OF 32...AND AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 41. THIS DAY WAS 12 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. HALF OF THE DAYS IN FEBRUARY...14...SAW AN AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE TEN DEGREES OR MORE BELOW NORMAL. FEBRUARY 7TH HAD THE GREATEST TEMPERATURE DEPARTURE...24 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 8 BELOW ZERO ON THE 11TH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS JUST 18.4 DEGREES...9.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS ONLY RANKED AS THE 12TH COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. FEBRUARY 1904 WAS THE COLDEST WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 14.4 DEGREES. FEBRUARY 1978 RANKED SECOND AT 14.7. THERE WERE 8 DAYS WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE BELOW ZERO IN FEBRUARY. FEBRUARY 1904 AND 1936 HOLD THE RECORD OF 14 DAYS WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE OF ZERO OR COLDER. PRECIPITATION FOR FEBRUARY WAS ABOVE NORMAL WITH A TOTAL OF 2.82 INCHES FALLING. THIS WAS 0.87 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKED AS JUST THE 20TH WETTEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION FELL ON 11 DAYS WITH THE GREATEST 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION BEING 1.64 INCHES ON THE 20TH. MOST OF THIS PRECIPITATION FELL IN THE FORM OF RAIN DURING THE SHORT PERIOD WHICH HAD WARMER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES. SNOWFALL AT SOUTH BEND UNOFFICIALLY WAS 19.7 INCHES...4.7 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 15 INCHES. THIS RANKED AS THE 22ND SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. MARCH ...A COLD START TO SPRING... MARCH WAS ANOTHER VERY COLD MONTH ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION DESPITE THE BEGINNING OF SPRING ON THE CALENDAR. THE PERSISTENT RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN CONTINUED THROUGH THE MONTH AND IN TURN ALLOWED THE JET STREAM TO DIVE SOUTH OUT OF THE ARCTIC REGION AND INTO THE GREAT LAKES AS IT HAS DONE MOST OF THE WINTER. SEVERAL COLD FRONTS WITH ARCTIC ORIGIN BROUGHT VERY COLD AIR SOUTH WHICH KEPT TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE AT SOUTH BEND WAS 30.0 DEGREES...7.5 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 8TH COLDEST MARCH ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE LAST DAY WITH A HIGH OF 68. THIS WAS THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE SINCE OCTOBER 2013. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 4 BELOW ZERO ON THE THIRD. THERE WERE 23 DAYS WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL AND 14 OF THESE DAYS WERE MORE THAN 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. MARCH THIRD HAD THE GREATEST DEPARTURE OF 26 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE HIGH ON THAT DAY WAS JUST 18 AND THE LOW WAS 4 BELOW ZERO. DESPITE IT BEING COLD IT WAS ACTUALLY A RELATIVELY DRY MONTH. THERE WAS 1.69 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...0.64 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 24TH DRIEST MARCH ON RECORD. APRIL ...A RELATIVELY NORMAL APRIL... DESPITE THE MONTH FEELING COOL...TEMPERATURES WERE ACTUALLY NEAR NORMAL AND PRECIPITATION WAS BELOW NORMAL IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA. THERE WERE NO PERIODS OF SUSTAINED WARMTH AND SEVERAL WINDY DAYS. THIS LIKELY HELPED CREATE THE FEELING THAT IT WAS COLDER THAN ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURES INDICATED. THE OVERALL WEATHER PATTERN BECAME MORE TYPICAL OF SPRING AS THE DOMINANT WEST COAST RIDGE BROKE DOWN AND THE LARGE SCALE FLOW BECAME MORE ZONAL ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. THIS ALLOWED FOR MORE SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES BUT OCCASIONAL STORM SYSTEMS BROUGHT PERIODS OF PRECIPITATION AND BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THERE WERE NO SUSTAINED PERIODS OF WARMTH IN APRIL WITH THE LONGEST STRETCH OF DAYS WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES BEING JUST FOUR FROM THE 10TH THROUGH THE 13TH. THERE WERE 16 DAYS WITH BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. IT WAS ALSO A VERY WINDY MONTH WITH 18 DAYS HAVING A PEAK WIND GUST OF 30 MPH OR GREATER AND 6 DAYS WITH A PEAK WIND OF 40 MPH OR HIGHER. THE FASTEST PEAK WIND GUST MEASURED WAS 49 MPH ON THE 29TH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 49.2 WHICH WAS JUST 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 79 ON THE 21ST AND THE COLDEST WAS 26 ON THE 6TH. IT WAS ALSO A RELATIVELY DRY MONTH WITH JUST 2.35 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FALLING. THIS WAS 0.88 INCHES BELOW NORMAL AND RANKED AS THE 34TH DRIEST APRIL ON RECORD. MARCH WAS ALSO A RELATIVELY DRY MONTH WITH A DEFICIT OF NEARLY THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH. APRIL SNOWFALL WAS 1.1 INCHES...JUST THREE TENTHS OF AN INCH BELOW NORMAL. MAY ...WET WITH SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR MAY AT SOUTH BEND... MAY STARTED OUT RELATIVELY COOL AND DRY AT SOUTH BEND...WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR OR BELOW NORMAL FOR THE FIRST 6 DAYS OF THE MONTH...AND ONLY 0.19 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION OVER THE FIRST 8 DAYS. WARMER AND WETTER WEATHER PATTERN WAS THE STORY FOR THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH...WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION ON 7 OF THE 9 DAYS FROM THE 9TH THROUGH THE 18TH AND 4 DAYS OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S OR GREATER. THIS INCLUDED A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 91 DEGREES ON THE 8TH. THIS IS THE 4TH EARLIEST FIRST 90 DEGREE DAY OF THE YEAR AT SOUTH BEND ON RECORD...THE EARLIEST SINCE 1949...WHEN A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 90 WAS RECORDED ON MAY 5TH. ANOTHER COLD SPELL IMPACTED THE REGION OVER THE THIRD WEEK OF THE MONTH...WITH A HIGH OF 45 AND A LOW OF 32 ON THE 16TH. HOWEVER THE MONTH ENDED ON A WARM SPELL...WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ABOVE NORMAL ON 8 OUT OF THE LAST 11 DAYS OF THE MONTH...INCLUDING 7 CONSECUTIVE 80 DEGREE DAYS TO END THE MONTH. THE QUIET START TO THE SEVERE WEATHER SEASON CONTINUED INTO MAY ACROSS THE SOUTH BEND AREA. ISOLATED STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IMPACTED PORTIONS OF THE REGION ON THE 9TH...11TH AND 13TH. MORE WIDESPREAD STRONG TO LOW END SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IMPACTED THE REGION ON THE 20TH AND 21ST...AND SCATTERED STRONG THUNDERSTORMS IMPACTED PORTIONS OF THE AREA ON THE 26TH THROUGH 28TH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN MAY AT SOUTH BEND WAS 60.7 DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-42ND WARMEST MAY ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 91 ON THE 8TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 32 ON THE 16TH. PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL WITH 5.10 INCHES FALLING DURING THE MONTH. THIS IS 1.27 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKED AS THE 29TH WETTEST MAY ON RECORD. MEASURABLE RAINFALL FELL DURING 17 DAYS IN MAY...WITH FIVE DAYS SEEING A HALF INCH OR MORE OF RAINFALL. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION WAS 1.10 INCHES ON THE 26TH AND 27TH. JUNE ...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NEAR RECORD RAINFALL IN JUNE... JUNE 2014 WAS A VERY WARM AND WET MONTH AT SOUTH BEND. THE OVERALL WEATHER PATTERN ALLOWED FOR A WARM AND HUMID AIRMASS TO STAY ENTRENCHED ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH...WHICH BROUGHT PERIODIC SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE MICHIANA REGION THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. THE MONTHLY RAINFALL TOTAL OF OVER NINE INCHES WAS THE WETTEST MONTH SINCE SEPTEMBER OF 2008...WHEN MULTIPLE REMNANT TROPICAL SYSTEMS BROUGHT TORRENTIAL RAINFALL TO THE REGION. IT WAS ALSO THE WETTEST JUNE AT SOUTH BEND IN 21 YEARS. THE THUNDERSTORM AND RAINFALL ACTIVITY WAS FAIRLY SCATTERED...AND WHILE PORTIONS OF THE REGION HAD RAINFALL TOTALS WELL ABOVE NORMAL...SOME AREAS SOUTHEAST OF MICHIANA ACTUALLY SAW NEAR OR ONLY SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL...AND WHILE THE HUMIDITY THROUGHOUT THE MONTH MADE IT FEEL VERY WARM...ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURES WERE NEVER TOO EXTREME. ONLY ONE DAY DURING JUNE REACHED 90 DEGREES AT SOUTH BEND. THERE WERE ONLY 6 DAYS DURING THE ENTIRE MONTH WHEN THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL. HOWEVER...ONLY 5 JUNE DAYS HAD AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURES OF AT LEAST 7 DEGREES OR GREATER ABOVE NORMAL. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN JUNE AT SOUTH BEND WAS 71.4 DEGREES...WHICH IS 2.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-26TH WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURES WAS 90 DEGREES ON THE 17TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 48 ON THE 5TH AND THE 14TH. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE AT SOUTH BEND WAS 9.14 INCHES...WHICH IS 5.35 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE SECOND WETTEST JUNE ON RECORD BEHIND 1993...WHEN 10.86 INCHES FELL DURING THE MONTH. THIS ALSO RANKED AS THE 6TH OVERALL WETTEST MONTH ON RECORD. THE RECORD WETTEST MONTH AT SOUTH BEND WAS SEPTEMBER 2008 WHEN 13.92 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. AT LEAST A TRACE OF RAIN FELL AT SOUTH BEND DURING 18 DAYS OF THE MONTH...AND 13 OF THESE DAYS HAD MEASURABLE RAINFALL...EACH ONE WITH AT LEAST A TENTH OF AN INCH OF RAINFALL. 9 DAYS HAD AT LEAST A HALF INCH OF RAINFALL...AND THREE DAYS WITH AT LEAST AN INCH OF RAINFALL. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 2.20 INCHES ON THE 17TH AND 18TH...AND THE GREATEST CALENDAR DAY RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 1.54 INCHES ON THE 17TH. JULY ...WELL BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND NEAR RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES AT SOUTH BEND... THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN JULY AT SOUTH BEND WAS 68.7 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 4.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE THIRD COLDEST JULY ON RECORD....BEHIND 1996 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.5 AND 2009 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.3. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS ONLY 89 DEGREES ON THE 22ND AND THE COLDEST WAS 50 ON THE 17TH AND THE 29TH. JULY 2014 WAS THE FIRST JULY WITHOUT A 90 DEGREE DAY SINCE 2009...AND THE 10TH JULY ON RECORD WITHOUT A 90 DEGREE DAY. AFTER 9.14 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN JUNE...THE TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH OF JULY AT SOUTH BEND WAS ONLY 1.79 INCHES...2.21 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 24TH DRIEST JULY ON RECORD...AND THE DRIEST JULY SINCE 1993 WHEN ONLY 1.51 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL. THERE WERE ONLY 9 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION...AND ONLY 6 DAYS WITH 0.10 INCHES OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 0.90 INCHES ENDING ON THE 1ST...AND THE GREATEST CALENDAR DAY RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 0.47 INCHES ON THE 13TH. AUGUST ...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION AT SOUTH BEND... AFTER THE THIRD COLDEST JULY ON RECORD...AUGUST 2014 STARTED OUT WITH NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE FIRST 11 DAYS OF THE MONTH. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION BROUGHT BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 69 DEGREES ON THE 12TH. A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE CENTRAL UNITED STATES BUILT NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY INTO THE GREAT LAKES REGION AFTER THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. THIS BROUGHT NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE MONTH. WITH THE GREAT LAKES ON THE FRINGE OF THIS HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE...THE LOCAL AREA WAS PRIMED FOR AN ACTIVE PRECIPITATION PATTERN DURING THE LAST HALF OF AUGUST. ALTHOUGH THE SOUTH BEND AREA ITSELF RECEIVED BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH...AREAS JUST TO THE SOUTH OF SOUTH BEND SAW WELL ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN AUGUST AT SOUTH BEND WAS 72.6 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 37TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 91 DEGREES ON THE 25TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 46 ON THE 15TH. WITH ONLY ONE 90 DEGREE DAY...AUGUST 2014 HAD THE FEWEST NUMBER OF 90 DEGREE DAYS AT SOUTH BEND IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST SINCE 2008...WHEN THERE WERE NO 90 DEGREE DAYS THAT MONTH. LIKE JULY 2014...AUGUST WAS ANOTHER DRY MONTH AT SOUTH BEND. ONLY 2.20 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL...WHICH IS 1.56 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-30TH DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD...AND THE DRIEST AUGUST SINCE 2010 WHEN ONLY 0.92 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL. THERE WERE ONLY 11 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION...AND ONLY 8 DAYS WITH 0.10 INCHES OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 0.51 INCHES ON THE 5TH. SEPTEMBER ...SEPTEMBER WAS RELATIVELY MILD WITH BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION... THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER COULD BE BROKEN DOWN INTO THIRDS...WITH THE BEGINNING AND ENDING THIRDS WARM AND THE MIDDLE THIRD QUITE COOL. THE RESULT WAS A NEAR NORMAL MONTH IN TERMS OF TEMPERATURES WITH MONTHLY PRECIPITATION SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. THE MONTH BEGAN QUITE WARM WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S ON THE FIRST FOUR DAYS AND A HIGH OF 91 ON THE 5TH BEFORE A STRONG COLD FRONT SWEPT THROUGH THE AREA. THIS FRONT BROUGHT SEVERAL INCHES OF BENEFICIAL RAINFALL TO THE REGION WITH OVER AN INCH FALLING AT SOUTH BEND. SEVERE WEATHER ALSO OCCURRED WITH THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS IN A FEW LOCATIONS. THIS FIRST COLD FRONT DROPPED TEMPERATURES BACK INTO THE 70S AND NEAR NORMAL FOR EARLY SEPTEMBER BUT A SECOND COLD FRONT ALONG WITH REMNANT MOISTURE FROM PACIFIC HURRICANE NORBERT BROUGHT MORE HEAVY RAINFALL TO THE AREA ON SEPTEMBER 10TH. TEMPERATURES BEHIND THIS FRONT DROPPED WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MIDDLE PORTION OF THE MONTH. AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURES BETWEEN THE 11TH AND 23RD OF SEPTEMBER WERE BELOW NORMAL EACH DAY EXCEPT FOR THE 20TH. TEMPERATURES WERE AS MUCH AS 13 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL ON THE 13TH. LOW TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE 40S EACH MORNING DURING THIS STRETCH. TEMPERATURES MODERATED BRIEFLY ON THE 20TH WITH HIGHS BACK AROUND 80 AHEAD OF ANOTHER STRONG COLD FRONT. THIS FRONT BROUGHT RAIN AND SEVERE WEATHER BACK TO THE REGION DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON HOURS ON THE 20TH. MANY AREAS EXPERIENCED WIND DAMAGE AND HEAVY RAINFALL FROM A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT MOVED THROUGH AHEAD OF THE MAIN COLD FRONT. THE COOLER WEATHER BEHIND THIS FRONT WAS BRIEF AS MILD AND DRY WEATHER RETURNED TO END THE MONTH. HIGH TEMPERATURES CLIMBED BACK INTO THE 80S ON FOUR OF THE LAST 5 DAYS TO END SEPTEMBER. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 63.2 DEGREES...0.7 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-39TH COOLEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE WAS 91 ON THE 5TH AND THE COOLEST WAS 40 ON THE 22ND. TOTAL PRECIPITATION WAS 2.71 INCHES...0.82 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-47TH DRIEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL WAS 1.14 INCHES ON THE 5TH AND 6TH. A TOTAL OF 11 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER HAD MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION AND TWO OF THESE DAYS HAD GREATER THAN ONE HALF INCH OF RAINFALL. OCTOBER ...A SLIGHTLY WARM BUT WET OCTOBER IN SOUTH BEND AREA... THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS JUST SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN NORMAL IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA BUT PRECIPITATION WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL. AS WITH MANY OCTOBER MONTHS...TEMPERATURES FLUCTUATED SIGNIFICANTLY WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM THE UPPER 70S TO MIDDLE 40S AND LOW TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM THE LOWER 60S TO LOWER 30S. THE MONTH ENDED WITH THE FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON ON HALLOWEEN. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE AT SOUTH BEND WAS 52.4 DEGREES...JUST 0.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 50TH COOLEST OCTOBER ON RECORD DATING BACK TO 1894. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE WAS 77 ON THE 2ND AND THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE WAS 30 ON THE 22ND AND 23RD. THE DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL ON 16 DAYS AND ONLY ONE DAY...THE 4TH...HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE MORE THAN 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL (13 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL). THERE WERE FOUR DAYS WITH AN AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE OF TEN OR MORE DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE 27TH WAS THE WARMEST DAY WITH REGARDS TO DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL AS THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE ON THIS DAY WAS 13 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 5.68 INCHES...2.36 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 10TH WETTEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION FELL ON 14 DAYS AND 2 DAYS HAD MORE THAN AN INCH OF PRECIPITATION...THE SECOND AND THE THIRD OF THE MONTH. AS A MATTER OF FACT...3.83 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ON THESE TWO DAYS. THAT WAS NEARLY 70 PERCENT OF THE MONTHLY TOTAL. THE MONTH ENDED WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT BLASTING THROUGH THE REGION. TEMPERATURES FELL FROM THE 40S INTO THE 30S ON HALLOWEEN DAY. RAIN SHOWERS TURNED TO SNOW SHOWERS WITH SEVERAL LOCATIONS RECEIVING THEIR FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON. AMOUNTS WERE GENERALLY A HALF INCH OR LESS AND CONFINED TO GRASSY SURFACES. SOUTH BEND OFFICIALLY REPORTED TWO TENTHS OF AN INCH. THIS WAS THE 4TH SNOWIEST HALLOWEEN ON RECORD AND THE 29TH SNOWIEST OCTOBER. ...NOVEMBER... ...A COLD AND SNOWY MONTH IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA... IT WAS A COLD NOVEMBER WITH ABOVE NORMAL SNOWFALL IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA. SEVERAL ROUNDS OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE ACCUMULATIONS IN SOUTH BEND...WITH ONE SINGLE EVENT DROPPING A FOOT OF SNOW ON THE CITY. THIS LAKE EFFECT WAS CAUSED BY THE INTRUSION OF VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR OVER THE RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF LAKE MICHIGAN. THIS COMBINATION IN NOVEMBER CAN PRODUCE VERY INTENSE LAKE EFFECT SNOW BANDS. DESPITE THE COLD AND SNOW...THERE WERE BRIEF PERIODS OF WARMTH DURING THE MONTH...INCLUDING THE FIRST WEEK WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 60S AND THE LAST TWO DAYS WHEN HIGHS REACHED THE MIDDLE AND UPPER 50S. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE FOR NOVEMBER WAS 34.4 DEGREES...6.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 6TH COLDEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD IN THE SOUTH BEND AREA. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE DURING THE MONTH WAS 63 ON THE 3RD AND THE COLDEST WAS 10 ON THE 15TH AND 18TH. THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH SAW A STRETCH OF VERY COLD TEMPERATURES WITH THE FIRST ARCTIC BLAST OF THE SEASON. THE REMNANTS OF SUPER TYPHOON NURI MOVED OUT OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND INTO THE BERING SEA BY THE THE SECOND WEEK OF NOVEMBER. THIS STORM SYSTEM THEN HELPED PUSH AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT INTO THE UNITED STATES WHICH BROUGHT SUBFREEZING TEMPERATURES TO EVERY STATE BY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. LOCALLY...TEMPERATURES PLUNGED TO RECORD LEVELS WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 10 AND 25 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL FOR 10 STRAIGHT DAYS BETWEEN THE 12TH AND 21ST. THE COLDEST DAY WAS THE 18TH WITH A HIGH OF ONLY 18 AND A LOW OF 10. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ON THIS DAY WAS JUST 14...A WHOPPING 26 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE HIGH OF 18 ALSO SET A RECORD FOR THE COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE ON THIS DATE...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 26 SET IN 1951. PRECIPITATION FOR NOVEMBER WAS 3.37 INCHES...JUST 0.10 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS ONLY THE 38TH WETTEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD. ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THIS PRECIPITATION OCCURRED ON JUST ONE DAY...NOVEMBER 23RD WHEN 1.24 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THIS WAS A DAILY RECORD FOR THAT DATE. THE ENTIRE RAIN EVENT PRODUCED 1.84 INCHES OVER THREE DAYS...OVER HALF OF THE ENTIRE MONTHLY TOTAL. DESPITE PRECIPITATION BEING NEAR NORMAL...SNOWFALL WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL. THERE WAS 19.1 INCHES OF SNOW RECORDED...14.3 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 4TH SNOWIEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD. DECEMBER 1977 WAS THE SNOWIEST WITH 30.3 INCHES. WEATHER OBSERVERS REPORTED 12.3 INCHES ON THE 13TH...A SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL RECORD FOR THAT DATE AND THE 4TH HIGHEST DAILY SNOWFALL TOTAL FOR THE SOUTH BEND AREA ON RECORD FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. THE HIGHEST DAILY NOVEMBER SNOWFALL RECORD IS 18.0 INCHES SET BACK ON NOVEMBER 2ND 1911. ...DECEMBER... AFTER A VERY COLD AND SNOWY NOVEMBER...DECEMBER WAS A DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT MONTH WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND SETTING A RECORD FOR THE LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. DECEMBER BEGAN WITH SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ENDED WITH TEMPERATURES MUCH BELOW NORMAL...BUT IN BETWEEN MOST DAYS WERE WARMER THAN NORMAL. ONLY 9 DAYS HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE BELOW NORMAL AND THE COLDEST WAS ON THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH WHICH WAS 11 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. BETWEEN THE 4TH AND 30TH...ONLY THREE DAYS WERE BELOW NORMAL...THE 10TH...11TH AND 12TH. THERE WERE 9 DAYS IN DECEMBER IN WHICH THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS GREATER THAN 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST DAY WAS THE 14TH WITH A HIGH OF 55 AND A LOW OF 45 FOR AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 50 DEGREES. IN COMPARISON...ONLY 3 DAYS IN NOVEMBER HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 50 DEGREES OR WARMER. THE WEATHER WAS VERY TRANQUIL AND RELATIVELY MILD...ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE VERY COLD AND SNOWY NOVEMBER. ONLY A HANDFUL OF WEATHER SYSTEMS BROUGHT PRECIPITATION TO THE SOUTH BEND AREA. ABOUT HALF OF THE MONTHS PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 23RD AND 24TH WITH A VERY COMPLEX WINTER STORM SYSTEM THAT MOVED JUST EAST OF THE LOCAL AREA. WITH COLD AIR LACKING AND WARM MOISTURE FROM THE PACIFIC AND GULF OF MEXICO STREAMING INTO THE AREA...PRECIPITATION FELL AS MAINLY RAIN WITH ONLY A FEW WET SNOWFLAKES FALLING ON THE BACK SIDE AS THIS SYSTEM DEPARTED. WITH THE LACK OF COLD AIR AND PRECIPITATION PRODUCING WEATHER SYSTEMS...IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THE MONTH ENDED AS THE LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD IN SOUTH BEND. WHAT IS A SURPRISE IS THAT IT FOLLOWED A NOVEMBER THAT WAS THE 4TH SNOWIEST ON RECORD WITH 19.3 INCHES OF SNOW. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 33.2 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 20TH WARMEST DECEMBER. THERE WERE JUST 3 DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 32 DEGREES OR COLDER. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 55 ON THE 14TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 8 ON THE 31ST. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 1.47 INCHES...1.14 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 22ND DRIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. WHILE A TRACE OF SNOW FELL ON 10 DAYS...MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON JUST ONE SINGLE DAY...DECEMBER 30TH. ONLY 0.2 INCHES OF SNOW WAS MEASURED AND THIS MARKS THE LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. THE OLD RECORD WAS 0.5 INCHES SET IN 1912. THIS ALSO TIES THE RECORD FOR THE FEWEST NUMBER OF DAYS WITH MEASURABLE SNOWFALL IN DECEMBER AT SOUTH BEND. DECEMBER 1912 AND DECEMBER 1931 BOTH HAD ONLY 1 DAY OF MEASURABLE SNOWFALL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE YEAR WAS 47.5 WHICH WAS 3.0 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 2ND COLDEST YEAR ON RECORD. THE COLDEST YEAR EVER RECORDED WAS 1917 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 46.5 DEGREES. THERE WAS 42.84 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...4.50 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 10TH WETTEST YEAR. SNOWFALL FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR WAS 68.6 INCHES...35.1 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE SNOWIEST CALENDAR YEAR ON RECORD...EXCEEDING THE PREVIOUS RECORD BY 7 INCHES...WHICH WAS SET IN 1982. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPRESSIVE CONSIDERING DECEMBER ONLY ACCOUNTED FOR 0.6 INCHES OF SNOW. BELOW IS A REVIEW OF THE 2014 WEATHER FROM A COMPILATION OF THE MONTHLY SUMMARIES. JANUARY ...EXTREMELY COLD WITH RECORD SNOW IN JANUARY AT FORT WAYNE... THE HARSH WINTER OF 2013 CONTINUED INTO JANUARY WITH VERY COLD TEMPERATURES...DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS AND A LOT OF SNOW. JANUARY BEGAN COLD WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD HAVING AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ABOUT 20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO 10 BELOW ZERO. THIS WAS JUST A TEASE OF WHAT WAS ABOUT TO COME A FEW DAYS LATER. ONE OF THE COLDEST OUTBREAKS IN RECENT MEMORY ARRIVED ON THE 6TH IN THE WAKE OF ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SNOWFALLS. A STRONG STORM SYSTEM MOVED THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY AND DROPPED BETWEEN 10 AND 18 INCHES OF SNOW ON MANY LOCATIONS ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA AND NORTHWEST OHIO. LOW TEMPERATURES DROPPED BELOW ZERO FOR 2 CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS BETWEEN THE 6TH AND 7TH. A BRIEF WARMUP OCCURRED BETWEEN THE 10TH AND 14TH AS TEMPERATURES WARMED INTO THE 40S. LOW TEMPERATURES DROPPED BELOW ZERO FROM THE 21ST THROUGH THE 24TH THEN FELL TO 16 BELOW ZERO ON THE 28TH. WIND CHILLS ONCE AGAIN DROPPED TO NEAR 35 BELOW ZERO DURING THIS COLD PERIOD. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 17.0 DEGREES...7.9 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 10TH COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THERE WERE 10 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING BELOW ZERO. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 45 ON THE 13TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 16 BELOW ZERO ON THE 28TH. THE COLDEST DAY OF THE MONTH WAS JANUARY 28TH WITH A HIGH OF 3 AND A LOW OF 16 BELOW FOR AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 6 BELOW ZERO...31 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 2.59 INCHES...0.33 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS ONLY RANKED AS THE 31ST WETTEST JANUARY ON RECORD. HOWEVER...IT WAS A VERY SNOWY MONTH. A RECORD TOTAL OF 30.3 INCHES OF SNOW WAS RECORDED...19.3 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS NOT ONLY RANKED AS THE SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD...BUT IS ALSO THE SNOWIEST OF ANY MONTH ON RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR SNOWFALL TOTAL WAS ON THE 5TH WHEN 9.5 INCHES OF SNOW FELL. THE GREATEST SNOW DEPTH OF THE MONTH WAS 12 ON THE MORNING OF THE 6TH. THE VERY COLD AIR IS THE REASON THAT SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WERE SO HIGH DESPITE ONLY 2.59 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION BEING MEASURED. FEBRUARY ...ANOTHER VERY COLD MONTH WITH NEAR RECORD SNOWFALL... FEBRUARY CONTINUED A STREAK OF MONTHS WITH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA ALONG WITH NEAR RECORD SNOWFALL. THIS WAS THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH WITH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES...AND IT WAS ALSO THE COLDEST MONTH OF THE WINTER SEASON. IT WAS ALSO ANOTHER VERY SNOWY MONTH WITH NEARLY 20 INCHES FALLING AT THE AIRPORT. THERE WERE ONLY 6 DAYS IN FEBRUARY WITH A DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ABOVE NORMAL...AND 5 OF THESE DAYS OCCURRED IN A ROW BETWEEN THE 18TH AND 22ND. THE ONLY OTHER ABOVE NORMAL DAY WAS THE FIRST. THE WARMEST DAY OCCURRED ON THE 20TH WITH A HIGH OF 49...A LOW OF 28...AND AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 39. THIS WAS JUST 9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. MORE THAN HALF OF THE DAYS IN FEBRUARY...16...SAW AN AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE TEN DEGREES OR MORE BELOW NORMAL. FEBRUARY 11TH WAS THE COLDEST DAY OF THE MONTH WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE THAT WAS 29 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE IN FEBRUARY ALSO OCCURRED ON THIS MORNING WITH 16 BELOW ZERO RECORDED. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS JUST 17.6 DEGREES...10.7 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 5TH COLDEST FEBRUARY SINCE 1912. FEBRUARY 1978 WAS THE COLDEST FEBRUARY WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 11.8 DEGREES. THERE WERE 8 DAYS WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE BELOW ZERO. FEBRUARY 1978 HOLDS THE RECORD OF 18 DAYS WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE OF ZERO OR COLDER. PRECIPITATION FOR FEBRUARY WAS 3.49 INCHES...1.45 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 13TH WETTEST FEBRUARY SINCE 1912. MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION FELL ON 10 DAYS WITH THE GREATEST 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION BEING 1.14 INCHES ON THE FIRST. SNOWFALL FOR FEBRUARY WAS 19.2 INCHES...11.5 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE THIRD SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD AND THE SNOWIEST FEBRUARY SINCE 1908. MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON 12 DAYS DURING THE MONTH AND THE GREATEST 24 HOUR SNOWFALL WAS 6.2 INCHES ON THE 5TH. THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE INCH OF SNOW ON THE GROUND EVERY DAY IN FEBRUARY. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED IN 5 OTHER YEARS SINCE 1912. THOSE YEARS WERE 1914...1982...1978...1979 AND 2007. MARCH ...A COLD AND SNOWY START TO SPRING... MARCH WAS ANOTHER VERY COLD MONTH ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION DESPITE THE BEGINNING OF SPRING ON THE CALENDAR. IT WAS ALSO A VERY SNOWY MONTH FOR PARTS OF NORTHEAST AND EAST CENTRAL INDIANA AS MANY LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER 10 INCHES OF SNOW. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL SYSTEMS THAT DEVELOPED IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND TRACKED THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY. MOISTURE ASSOCIATED WITH THESE SYSTEMS MOVED NORTH AND INTERACTED WITH THE COLD AIR...LEADING TO SEVERAL DAYS OF SNOWFALL OVER NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST INDIANA. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE AT FORT WAYNE WAS 30.3 DEGREES...8.1 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 6TH COLDEST MARCH ON RECORD SINCE 1912. THIS WAS ALSO THE COLDEST MARCH IN FORT WAYNE SINCE 1984...WHICH WAS THE SECOND COLDEST MARCH ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE LAST DAY WITH A HIGH OF 65. THIS WAS THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE SINCE NOVEMBER 2013. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 3 BELOW ZERO ON THE THIRD. THERE WERE 23 DAYS WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE BELOW NORMAL AND 14 OF THESE DAYS WERE MORE THAN 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. MARCH THIRD HAD THE GREATEST DEPARTURE OF 27 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE HIGH ON THAT DAY WAS JUST 14 AND THE LOW WAS 3 BELOW ZERO. DESPITE IT BEING COLD IT WAS ACTUALLY A RELATIVELY DRY MONTH. THERE WAS 1.90 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...0.70 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 23RD DRIEST MARCH ON RECORD SINCE 1912. SNOWFALL WAS 13.2 INCHES...9.1 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 5TH SNOWIEST MARCH ON RECORD. INTERESTINGLY...MARCH 2013 RANKED AS THE 3RD SNOWIEST MARCH ON RECORD WITH 18.1 INCHES AND 1964 IS THE SNOWIEST MARCH ON RECORD WITH 19.5 INCHES. JUST TWO YEARS AGO...MARCH 2012 WAS THE WARMEST MARCH ON RECORD WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 52.6 DEGREES AND ONLY 0.3 INCHES OF SNOW FELL IN THAT ENTIRE MONTH. APRIL ...A RELATIVELY NORMAL APRIL... DESPITE THE MONTH FEELING COOL...TEMPERATURES WERE ACTUALLY NEAR NORMAL AND PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA. THERE WERE 14 DAYS WITH BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES AND 4 DAYS WITH EXACTLY NORMAL TEMPERATURES. IT WAS ALSO A VERY WINDY MONTH WITH 16 DAYS HAVING A PEAK WIND GUST OF 30 MPH OR GREATER AND 7 DAYS WITH A PEAK WIND OF 40 MPH OR HIGHER. THE FASTEST PEAK WIND GUST MEASURED WAS 48 MPH ON THE 4TH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 49.8 WHICH WAS JUST 0.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 79 ON THE 21ST AND THE COLDEST WAS 23 ON THE 16TH. PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL WITH 3.99 INCHES FALLING. THIS WAS 0.47 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKED AS THE 33RD WETTEST APRIL ON RECORD. APRIL SNOWFALL WAS 1.1 INCHES...JUST ONE TENTH OF AN INCH ABOVE NORMAL. MAY ...SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION FOR MAY AT FORT WAYNE... MAY STARTED OUT RELATIVELY COOL AND DRY AT FORT WAYNE...WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR OR BELOW NORMAL FOR THE FIRST 6 DAYS OF THE MONTH...AND ONLY 0.01 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION OVER THE FIRST 8 DAYS. WARMER AND WETTER WEATHER PATTERN WAS THE STORY FOR THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH...WITH TWO DAYS OF AN INCH OR MORE OF RAIN AND 5 DAYS OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S. ANOTHER COLD SPELL IMPACTED THE REGION OVER THE THIRD WEEK OF THE MONTH...WITH A HIGH OF 52 AND A LOW OF 34 ON THE 16TH. HOWEVER THE MONTH ENDED ON A WARM SPELL...WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ABOVE NORMAL ON 9 OUT OF THE LAST 11 DAYS OF THE MONTH...AND FAIRLY DRY CONDITIONS...WITH ONLY 0.55 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FROM THE 16TH THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. THE QUIET START TO THE SEVERE WEATHER SEASON CONTINUED INTO MAY ACROSS THE FORT WAYNE AREA. AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM DOWNBURST OVER THE FORT WAYNE AIRPORT PRODUCED A MEASURED 63 MPH WIND GUST ON THE EVENING OF THE 27TH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN MAY AT FORT WAYNE WAS 61.5 DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-45TH WARMEST MAY ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 89 ON THE 8TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 34 ON THE 16TH. PRECIPITATION WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL WITH 4.57 INCHES FALLING DURING THE MONTH. THIS IS 0.30 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKED AS THE 32ND WETTEST MAY ON RECORD. MEASURABLE RAINFALL FELL DURING 11 DAYS IN MAY...WITH TWO DAYS SEEING AN INCH OR MORE OF RAINFALL. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION WAS 1.67 INCHES ON THE 14TH AND 15TH. JUNE ...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION IN JUNE... JUNE 2014 WAS A WARM AND WET MONTH AT FORT WAYNE. THE OVERALL WEATHER PATTERN ALLOWED FOR A WARM AND HUMID AIRMASS TO STAY ENTRENCHED ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH...WHICH BROUGHT PERIODIC SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE FORT WAYNE THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. THE THUNDERSTORM AND RAINFALL ACTIVITY WAS FAIRLY SCATTERED...AND WHILE PORTIONS OF THE REGION HAD RAINFALL TOTALS WELL ABOVE NORMAL...SOME AREAS NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE FORT WAYNE AREA ACTUALLY SAW NEAR OR ONLY SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL...AND WHILE THE HUMIDITY THROUGHOUT THE MONTH MADE IT FEEL VERY WARM...ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURES WERE NEVER TOO EXTREME. ONLY TWO DAYS DURING JUNE REACHED 90 DEGREES AT FORT WAYNE. THERE WERE ONLY 7 DAYS DURING THE ENTIRE MONTH WHEN THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL...BUT NONE DURING THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH. HOWEVER...ONLY 6 JUNE DAYS HAD AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURES OF AT LEAST 7 DEGREES OR GREATER ABOVE NORMAL. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN JUNE AT FORT WAYNE WAS 71.9 DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 29TH WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURES WAS 93 DEGREES ON THE 17TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 45 ON THE 14TH. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE AT FORT WAYNE WAS 5.81 INCHES...WHICH IS 1.65 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 14TH WETTEST JUNE ON RECORD. NEARLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF RAIN FELL AT FORT WAYNE DURING JUNE 2013...WHEN THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTAL WAS 5.91 INCHES. AT LEAST A TRACE OF RAIN FELL AT SOUTH BEND DURING 18 DAYS OF THE MONTH...AND 12 OF THESE DAYS HAD MEASURABLE RAINFALL...10 OF WHICH WITH AT LEAST A TENTH OF AN INCH OF RAINFALL. 4 DAYS HAD AT LEAST A HALF INCH OF RAINFALL...AND TWO DAYS WITH AT LEAST AN INCH OF RAINFALL. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 2.22 INCHES ON THE 18TH AND 19TH...AND THE GREATEST CALENDAR DAY RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 1.73 INCHES ON THE 18TH. JULY ...WELL BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND NEAR RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES AT FORT WAYNE... THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN JULY AT FORT WAYNE WAS 69.0 DEGREES...4.6 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE SECOND COLDEST JULY ON RECORD....BEHIND 2009 WHICH HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.9 DEGREES. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS ONLY 89 DEGREES ON THE 22ND AND THE COLDEST WAS 48 ON THE 17TH AND THE 29TH. JULY 2014 WAS THE FIRST JULY WITHOUT A 90 DEGREE DAY SINCE 2009...AND THE 9TH JULY SINCE 1912 WITHOUT A 90 DEGREE DAY. AFTER 5.81 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN JUNE...THE TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH OF JULY WAS ONLY 2.00 INCHES...2.24 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 15TH DRIEST JULY ON RECORD...AND THE DRIEST JULY SINCE 2011 WHEN ONLY 0.98 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL. THERE WERE ONLY 10 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION THIS MONTH...AND ONLY 6 DAYS WITH 0.10 INCHES OR MORE. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 0.55 INCHES ON THE 1ST AND 27TH. AUGUST ...WET WITH SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AT FORT WAYNE... AFTER THE SECOND COLDEST JULY ON RECORD...AUGUST 2014 STARTED OUT WITH NEAR TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE FIRST 11 DAYS OF THE MONTH. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION BROUGHT BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 71 DEGREES ON THE 12TH AND A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 43 DEGREES ON THE 15TH. FORT WAYNE EXPERIENCED ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION...MUCH OF WHICH FELL DURING THIS TIME PERIOD...HOWEVER POINTS TO THE SOUTH AND WEST OF FORT WAYNE SAW MUCH MORE PRECIPITATION. MUCH OF THIS PRECIPITATION FELL ON AUGUST 21ST AND 22ND...WHEN A SERIES OF THUNDERSTORM COMPLEXES BROUGHT VERY HEAVY RAINFALL TO POINTS ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE US-30 CORRIDOR. WHILE FORT WAYNE RECEIVED 3.59 INCHES ON THESE TWO DAYS ALONE...AREAS TO THE SOUTH ACROSS GRANT AND BLACKFORD COUNTIES SAW OVER TEN INCHES OF RAINFALL DURING THIS 24 HOUR PERIOD...WHICH LED TO EXTENSIVE FLOODING. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN AUGUST AT FORT WAYNE WAS 71.3 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 0.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-44TH COLDEST AUGUST SINCE 1912. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 89 DEGREES ON THE 25TH AND THE COLDEST WAS 43 ON THE 15TH. WITH NO 90 DEGREE DAYS...AUGUST 2014 WAS ONLY THE 20TH AUGUST SINCE 1912 WITH NO 90 DEGREE DAYS. WITH NO 90 DEGREE DAYS IN AUGUST 2013 AT FORT WAYNE...THIS FIRST TIME ON RECORD WITH CONSECUTIVE YEARS WITH NO 90 DEGREE DAYS DURING AUGUST. AUGUST 2014 WAS AN OVERALL WET MONTH AT FORT WAYNE...WITH OVER HALF OF THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION FALLING IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD. 6.04 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL...WHICH IS 2.40 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 7TH WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD...AND THE WETTEST AUGUST SINCE 2007 WHEN 9.69 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL. THERE WERE ONLY 9 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION...AND ONLY 6 DAYS WITH 0.10 INCHES OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION. HOWEVER...THREE OF THESE DAYS HAD OVER 1.00 INCH OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 3.11 INCHES ON THE 21ST AND 22ND. SEPTEMBER ...SEPTEMBER WAS SLIGHTLY COOL WITH ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION... THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER COULD BE BROKEN DOWN INTO THIRDS...WITH THE BEGINNING AND ENDING THIRDS WARM AND THE MIDDLE THIRD QUITE COOL. THE RESULT WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WITH ABOVE NORMAL MONTHLY PRECIPITATION. THE MONTH BEGAN QUITE WARM WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES NEAR OR ABOVE 80 ON THE FIRST FOUR DAYS AND A HIGH OF 90 ON THE 5TH BEFORE A STRONG COLD FRONT SWEPT THROUGH THE AREA. THIS FRONT BROUGHT SEVERAL INCHES OF BENEFICIAL RAINFALL TO THE REGION BUT FORT WAYNE AIRPORT RECORDED JUST UNDER ONE HALF INCH. FORT WAYNE AIRPORT RECORDED 3.24 INCHES OF RAIN WITH THIS SYSTEM...A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL FOR THIS DATE. TEMPERATURES WERE AS MUCH AS 12 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL ON THE 13TH AND 15TH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 62.5 DEGREES...1.8 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE T-21ST COOLEST SEPTEMBER SINCE 1912. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE WAS 90 ON THE 5TH AND THE COOLEST WAS 41 ON THE 23RD. TOTAL PRECIPITATION WAS 4.90 INCHES...2.10 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 11TH WETTEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR RAINFALL WAS 3.24 INCHES ON THE 10TH...A DAILY RECORD. A TOTAL OF 10 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER HAD MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION AND TWO OF THESE DAYS HAD GREATER THAN ONE HALF INCH OF RAINFALL. OCTOBER ...A SLIGHTLY COOL OCTOBER WITH NEAR NORMAL PRECIPITATION... THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS JUST SLIGHTLY COOLER THAN NORMAL IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA AND PRECIPITATION WAS NEAR NORMAL. AS WITH MANY OCTOBER MONTHS...TEMPERATURES FLUCTUATED SIGNIFICANTLY WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM THE LOWER 80S TO MIDDLE 40S AND LOW TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM THE MIDDLE 50S TO LOWER 30S. THE MONTH ENDED WITH LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS FALLING ON HALLOWEEN. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE AT FORT WAYNE WAS 51.8 DEGREES...JUST 0.8 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 33RD COOLEST OCTOBER ON RECORD DATING BACK TO 1912. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE WAS 82 ON THE 2ND AND THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE WAS 30 ON THE 23RD. THE DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL ON 18 DAYS AND ONLY ONE DAY...THE 4TH...HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE MORE THAN 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL (14 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL). THERE WERE THREE DAYS WITH AN AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE OF TEN OR MORE DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST DAY WITH RESPECT TO AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DEPARTURE WAS OCTOBER 13TH WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE 13 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 2.78 INCHES...JUST 0.06 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 40TH WETTEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION FELL ON 14 DAYS AND ONLY 2 DAYS HAD MORE THAN A HALF INCH OF PRECIPITATION...THE 3RD AND 14TH. THE MONTH ENDED WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT BLASTING THROUGH THE REGION. TEMPERATURES FELL FROM THE 40S INTO THE 30S IN THE AFTERNOON ON HALLOWEEN. RAIN SHOWERS TURNED TO SNOW SHOWERS WITH SOME LOCATIONS RECEIVING THEIR FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON. AMOUNTS WERE GENERALLY A HALF INCH OR LESS AND CONFINED TO GRASSY SURFACES. FORT WAYNE OFFICIALLY REPORTED JUST A TRACE OF SNOWFALL FOR THIS EVENT. ...NOVEMBER... ...A COLD MONTH WITH ABOVE NORMAL SNOWFALL IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA... IT WAS A COLD NOVEMBER WITH ABOVE NORMAL SNOWFALL IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA. WHILE LAKE EFFECT SNOW WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE SNOW OVER NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHWEST INDIANA...SYSTEM SNOW WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE ACCUMULATIONS IN FORT WAYNE...WITH ONE SYSTEM DROPPING OVER 3 INCHES OF SNOW AT THE AIRPORT. THE TAIL END OF A FEW LAKE EFFECT SNOW BANDS DID REACH FORT WAYNE DURING THE MONTH BUT ACCUMULATIONS FROM THOSE WERE LIGHT. DESPITE THE COLD AND SNOW...THERE WERE BRIEF PERIODS OF WARMTH DURING THE MONTH...INCLUDING THE FIRST WEEK WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 60S AND THE LAST TWO DAYS WHEN HIGHS REACHED THE 50S AND 60S. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE FOR NOVEMBER WAS 34.8 DEGREES...6.6 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 6TH COLDEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA DATING BACK TO 1912. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE DURING THE MONTH WAS 64 ON THE 3RD AND THE COLDEST WAS 9 ON THE 18TH AND 21ST. LOCALLY...TEMPERATURES PLUNGED TO RECORD LEVELS WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 10 AND 27 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL FOR 11 STRAIGHT DAYS BETWEEN THE 12TH AND 22ND. THE COLDEST DAY WAS THE 18TH WITH A HIGH OF ONLY 17 AND A LOW OF 9. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ON THIS DAY WAS JUST 13...A WHOPPING 27 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE HIGH OF 17 ALSO SET A RECORD FOR THE COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE ON THIS DATE...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 24 SET IN 1903. THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 9 ALSO SET A RECORD...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 10 SET IN 1959. IN ADDITION...THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 9 ON THE 21ST ALSO SET A NEW RECORD LOW...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 11 IN 1964. PRECIPITATION FOR NOVEMBER WAS 3.05 INCHES...JUST 0.04 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS ONLY THE 34TH WETTEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD. ABOUT ONE HALF OF THIS PRECIPITATION OCCURRED ON JUST ONE DAY...NOVEMBER 23RD WHEN 1.56 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THIS WAS A DAILY RECORD FOR THAT DATE. THE ENTIRE RAIN EVENT PRODUCED 2.20 INCHES OVER THREE DAYS. DESPITE PRECIPITATION BEING NEAR NORMAL...SNOWFALL WAS ABOVE NORMAL. THERE WAS 4.2 INCHES OF SNOW RECORDED...2.4 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 25TH SNOWIEST NOVEMBER DATING BACK TO 1912. DECEMBER 1950 WAS THE SNOWIEST WITH 14.1 INCHES. WEATHER OBSERVERS REPORTED 3.4 INCHES ON THE 16TH...A SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL RECORD FOR THAT DATE. THIS RANKED AS THE 12TH GREATEST SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL FOR NOVEMBER...WITH THE GREATEST BEING 6.2 INCHES ON THE 29TH IN 1942. ...DECEMBER... AFTER A VERY COLD AND RELATIVELY SNOWY NOVEMBER...DECEMBER WAS A DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT MONTH WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND SNOWFALL THAT WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL. DECEMBER BEGAN WITH SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ENDED WITH TEMPERATURES MUCH BELOW NORMAL. HOWEVER...MOST DAYS IN BETWEEN WERE WARMER THAN NORMAL. ONLY 10 DAYS HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE BELOW NORMAL AND THE COLDEST WAS ON THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH WHICH WAS 11 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. BETWEEN THE 4TH AND 30TH...ONLY FOUR DAYS WERE BELOW NORMAL...THE 7TH...10TH...11TH AND 12TH. THERE WERE 7 DAYS IN DECEMBER IN WHICH THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS GREATER THAN 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST DAY WAS THE 23RD WITH A HIGH OF 56 AND A LOW OF 39 FOR AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 48 DEGREES. THE COLDEST DAY WAS THE 31ST WITH A HIGH OF 20...LOW OF 10 AND AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 15. THE WEATHER WAS VERY TRANQUIL AND RELATIVELY MILD...ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE VERY COLD AND SNOWY NOVEMBER. ONLY A HANDFUL OF WEATHER SYSTEMS BROUGHT PRECIPITATION TO THE FORT WAYNE AREA. 0.63 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 22ND...23RD AND 24TH WITH A VERY COMPLEX WINTER STORM SYSTEM THAT MOVED JUST EAST OF THE LOCAL AREA. ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM PASSING THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY BROUGHT 0.44 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION ON THE 15TH THROUGH 17TH. WITH THE LACK OF COLD AIR AND PRECIPITATION PRODUCING WEATHER SYSTEMS...IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THE MONTH ENDED AS ONE OF THE LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBERS ON RECORD IN FORT WAYNE. WHAT IS A SURPRISE IS THAT THIS FOLLOWED A NOVEMBER THAT HAD MORE SNOW AND WAS THE 25TH SNOWIEST NOVEMBER WITH 4.2 INCHES. IRONICALLY...FORT WAYNE RECEIVED MORE SNOWFALL IN DECEMBER THAN SOUTH BEND INDIANA...WHICH IS KNOWN FOR ITS LAKE EFFECT SNOWFALL. THIS HAS ONLY OCCURRED 12 TIMES SINCE 1912. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 32.6 DEGREES WHICH WAS 3.5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 29TH WARMEST DECEMBER DATING BACK TO 1912. THERE WERE JUST 6 DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 32 DEGREES OR COLDER. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 56 ON THE 23RD AND THE COLDEST WAS 10 ON THE 31ST. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 1.72 INCHES...1.05 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 32ND DRIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD SINCE 1912. MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON JUST FOUR DAYS WITH THE GREATEST BEING 0.2 INCHES ON BOTH THE 27TH AND 30TH. THIS RANKED AS THE 5TH LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD SINCE 1912.
