March 12th, 2014 Snow Event

A strong low pressure system moved from the Southern Plains across the Ohio Valley on Wednesday, March 12th, 2014. Precipitation started out as rain across most of the area before quickly switching to heavy snow across most of the area. Areas across the southern tier of the area saw rain longer which limited snowfall amounts in those locations. Due to the strong dynamics of the system, thundersnow was reported in many locations. This lead to impressive snowfall rates of 1-3" per hour. Strong winds also accompanied the system, with gusts up to 35-40 mph. This, combined with the heavy, wet nature of the snow, led to numerous power outages across the area. Hazardous travel conditions were also reported with numerous accidents on the roadways. Generally, 5 to 9 inches of snowfall fell during the event, with the highest totals found across NE Indiana and NW Ohio.

The map and table below depict some of the snowfall reports we received. Many thanks to our spotters, emergency management, local media, public, and cooperative and CoCoRaHS observers for their reports during the storm!
