A National Weather Service tornado survey team dispatched to Marshall County has confirmed that two tornado touchdowns occurred in the Argos area Wednesday evening. Both tornadoes were rated as EF1. The first touchdown occurred in a large grove of trees 1.2 miles west of Argos. This tornado heavily damaged multiple trees with one tree down across a vehicle and minor damage to a home. The second touchdown occurred 1.1 miles south southwest of Argos in a cornfield and had a subsequent path 250 yards long and 25 yards wide. These two tornadoes were embedded within a larger 2.5 mile wide microburst which began along Maple Road from 1 mile north to 1.5 miles south of State Road 10 and stretched to a point 2 miles southeast of Argos along 18th Road. Widespread tree damage and spotty structural damage was observed which included heavy roof damage to an industrial plant on the southwest side of the intersection of SR10 and US31 with additional heavy damage to a gas station awning on the northeast corner of this same intersection. Microburst winds were estimated to be up to 80 mph in places especially across the southwest corner of the town of Argos.
Elsewhere, significant damage was reported in Jay County, where a house was destroyed when lightning struck it and caught it on fire. There were several reports of hail, some up to golf ball size. Trees were down across the area with the most significant tree damage occurring in Jay and Northeast Cass Counties. The high winds lifted the roof of a horsebarn in Van Wert County and deposited it 400 feet away.
