A Stormy Friday the 13th for parts of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio

A warm front moved rapidly north through northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio into southern Lower Michigan during the morning as low pressure moved east through Illinois. A strong south to southwest  flow in the developing warm sector allowed for temperatures to climb to around 80 with surface dewpoints into the middle 60s.  With ample sunshine and moisture, moderate instability developed during the early afternoon. Thunderstorms initially developed in the warm sector and along the retreating warm front, but became more widespread as numerous outflow boundaries from collapsing thunderstorms interacted. The vast majority of reports received were in the form of wind damage and hail. For a complete summary see the Preliminary Local Storm Report below.

A few reports were received of a possible tornado near Rochester, Indiana Friday afternoon. Pictures were forwarded to the National Weather Service after being sent to TV station WSBT by a local resident. The pictures , shown below, indicate a definite circulation on the ground in an open field near the intersection of 200 W and Olson roads. Based on examination of the photos as well as additional information from the person submitting the pictures, it has been determined that this was a gustnado.  A gustnado is similar to a dustdevil or whirlwind and is not considered a tornado. No damage was reported with this gustnado.
