PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORTHERN INDIANA 1020 AM EST FRI DEC 24 2004 LOW PRESSURE DEVELOPED IN THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO DURING THE LATE MORNING HOURS OF WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 22. THIS LOW THEN MOVED NORTH NORTHEAST ACROSS THE LOWER MISSISIPPI VALLEY INTO EASTERN OHIO BY THURSDAY MORNING. ABUNDANT MOISTURE WAS DRAWN NORTHWARD INTO THE SYSTEM. AS A RESULT A LARGE SHIELD OF SNOW OVERSPREAD MUCH OF THE AREA DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS OF WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY MORNING. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS RANGED FROM 2 TO 6 INCHES ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHCENTRAL INDIANA AND SOUTHCENTRAL MICHIGAN. CLOSER TO THE TRACK OF THE LOW SNOWFALL WAS MUCH HEAVIER WITH AMOUNTS RANGING FROM 7 TO 13 INCHES ACROSS NORTHEASTERN INDIANA AND NORTHWEST OHIO. MEANWHILE LAKE EFFECT SNOW DEVELOPED SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST OF LAKE MICHIGAN AS ARCTIC AIR CROSSED OVER THE RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF THE LAKE.
