Overview
A line of severe thunderstorms formed across Northern Indiana providing numerous reports of wind damaging and damaging wind gusts. A few reports of large hail were received (one report of 2 inch hail near Bryan, OH), but damaging wind gusts were the main the main threat. Some higher end wind gusts in excess of 75 mph were also reported along with extensive tree damage.

Environment
A favorable combination of abundant low level moisture, drying mid levels, and a good amount of shear resulted in favorable conditions for severe weather development. Images courtesy of SPC.
Figure 1: 40-50 kts of effective shear was out in front of storms helping to keep them going during the afternoon. | Figure 2: 850 mb and 500 mb wind crossover. Notice how the 2 layers of winds were unidirectional or both out of the same direction. This allowed for more of a straightlined wind event as opposed to an event with rotating storms. Low level (850 mb, red color) winds are very strong in this graphic at over 35 to 40 kts. | Figure 3: Precipitable water values indicate how much moisture was in the column ready to be squeezed out of the atmosphere with enough forcing. Values approaching 2 inches like this day had are in the upper edge of climatology. |
Figure 4: Storms had ample instability to be able to work with as valued exceeded 2500 to 3000 surface based CAPE. | Figure 5: Instability for storms to use to create downdrafts (DCAPE) totaled around or slightly above 1000 J/kg, which is usually the threshold for severe downbursts. | Figure 6: Mid level lapse rates are another way to characterize instability. These were over 7 C/km at times. While hail was a secondary hazard, the threat was there with this parameter helping to sustain the upward motion of updrafts. |
