Severe Thunderstorm Areas This Saturday; Excessive Heat in the Southern U.S.

Damaging thunderstorm winds and a few tornadoes with areas of excessive rainfall are possible today over parts of the lower Great Lakes to upper Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, the Ozarks, and south-central High Plains. Excessive Heat Watch in effect from Tuesday morning through Friday evening. Well above average high temperatures with triple digit heat across the interior. Temperatures will remain cooler near the coast with continued onshore flow. In addition, limited overnight cooling is expected for areas away from the immediate coast and in higher terrain. Never leave people or pets in vehicles. Limit outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening. Stay hydrated and take cooling breaks.
The collection of regional temperature and precipitation data that makes up the RTP product will be automated starting July 1. The RTP product will continue to go out twice every day and will include area climate sites. As with the current product, all data are considered preliminary and subject to revision until certified by the National Center for Environmental Information.
