A multi-day weather event will likely disrupt travel across western Montana heading into the weekend and early next week. Expect MODERATE-to-HIGH impacts to road travel with rounds of freezing rain and snow over multiple days.
Multiple inches of snow are expected to start the weekend with a spread in possible outcomes due to chances for freezing rain that could decrease overall snowfall amounts. Chances for snow bands and/or squalls on Saturday could push snowfall amounts toward these upper limits.
There is high probability that western Montana will experience an arctic air mass by Monday of early next week. Possible impacts associated could be: cold wind chills, periods of snow; isolated freezing rain, gusty winds with blowing/drifting snow and tough travel. There is a 50% chance that Montana valleys along and south of Interstate 90 could experience periods of heavy snow during this period. While areas across north-central Idaho into Lemhi County have a better chance for experiencing freezing rain, the mountains could have periods of heavy snow. This is a fluid situation and bound to change, so be prepared for significant winter travel delays, and check the forecast for updates.
