...BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES AND WIND CHILLS IMPACT THE REGION...

A BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR MASS BROUGHT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURES
AND WIND CHILL VALUES TO THE SOUTH PLAINS REGION TUESDAY NIGHT
INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES FELL INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS
AREAWIDE...AND A FEW LOCATIONS ACROSS THE EXTREME SOUTHWEST
TEXAS PANHANDLE DROPPED BELOW 0 DEGREES. THE COLDEST READINGS
OCCURRED AT FRIONA AND DIMMITT...WHERE A MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF
-4 DEGREES WAS OBSERVED. THE OFFICIAL LOW AT THE PRESTON SMITH
LUBBOCK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS 4 DEGREES...BUT THE MERCURY
DROPPED TO 3 DEGREES AT THE NWS OFFICE AT THE SCIENCE SPECTRUM IN
THE CITY.

THE COMBINATION OF THE BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES AND BREEZY
NORTHERLY WINDS RESULTED IN DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES
TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. READINGS BETWEEN -20 TO -26
DEGREES WERE COMMON ACROSS THE EXTREME SOUTHERN PANHANDLE AND
NORTHERN SOUTH PLAINS. ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE ROLLING PLAINS AND
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE SOUTH PLAINS...READINGS BETWEEN -10 TO
-20 DEGREES WERE OBSERVED.

THE FOLLOWING LIST OF LOW TEMPERATURES AND WIND CHILLS REPRESENT
SOME OF THE COLDEST READINGS. THE DATA IS PROVIDED FROM AREA
COOPERATIVE OBSERVER SITES AND THE TEXAS TECH-WEST TEXAS MESONET.
