Snow Squalls May Impact New Year's Eve Travel from the Great Lakes to the Northeast; Heavy Rain Returns to California

An Alberta clipper will bring lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes, with the highest snow totals downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. More light snow accumulation will occur tonight as a cold front moves through the area. Temperatures today will be warmer than the previous few days, but they will be cold again tonight in the wake of the front.
A band of snow will become more well defined along a cold front as it moves south across the region tonight. Here is how the progression of the band might look like. There is still a bit of timing uncertainty, so this graphic provides time ranges for when each snapshot might occur. This will bring a brief period of much reduced visibility, and most of the accumulation tonight (albeit light) will occur quickly with this band. There is increased concern since there will be more people on the road tonight compared to most other nights and conditions may change rapidly.
