A Pacific storm and atmospheric river will impact the Pacific Northwest states and northern Rockies this weekend, bringing locally heavy low elevations rain and heavy high elevation snow in the mountains. High Wind Event A rapidly-deepening low pressure system moved through the region in the pre-dawn hours on December 30, 2019, with an extremely tight/local pressure gradient setting up for a several hour period across much of the Ohio Valley. This yielded strong wind gusts in the 50-60 MPH range, with isolated observed gusts of 70 MPH. These winds occurred outside of thunderstorms and were the result of a very tight pressure rise/fall couplet that traversed the area before sunrise. |
