THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON OH HAS CONFIRMED A TORNADO 3 MILES SOUTH OF CABLE IN CHAMPAIGN COUNTY OHIO ON JULY 27 2014. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN AT APPROXIMATELY 329 PM EDT ALONG US ROUTE 36...APPROXIMATELY TWO TENTHS OF A MILE NORTHEAST OF THE INTERSECTION WITH YOCOM ROAD. DAMAGE WAS PRIMARILY CONFINED TO THE PROPERTIES OF TWO ADJACENT RESIDENCES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF US ROUTE 36. THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE OCCURRED TO A DOUBLE WIDE MANUFACTURED HOME THAT LOST HALF OF ITS ROOF FROM THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE STRUCTURE. THE SHINGLES AND RAFTERS WERE LIFTED OVER THE HOME...AND DEPOSITED IMMEDIATELY TO THE SOUTH. A 20 FOOT TALL APPLE TREE LOCATED 60 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE HOME WAS UPROOTED AND FELL TO THE SOUTHEAST. THE ORIENTATION OF THIS DAMAGE INDICATED SOME CONVERGENT MOTION LIKELY ASSOCIATED WITH A CIRCULATION ON THE GROUND. OTHER SMALLER OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT AND TOYS WERE ALSO MOVED IN A SIMILAR CONVERGENT FASHION IN THIS SAME AREA. NUMEROUS SMALLER LIMBS...MOSTLY LESS THAN 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER...WERE BROKEN FROM A WILLOW TREE LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE HOME. THESE LIMBS WERE STREWN TO THE EAST FOR APPROXIMATELY 175 FEET INTO A NEIGHBORING YARD. THE ORIENTATION OF THIS DEBRIS INDICATES IT WAS LIKELY DEPOSITED BY THE FRONT SIDE OF THE TORNADIC CIRCULATION AFTER IT DAMAGED THE HOME. THE AFFECTED HOMEOWNERS DID NOT WITNESS THE TORNADO...BUT THERE WERE REPORTS OF FUNNEL CLOUDS IN THIS AREA AROUND THE TIME THIS DAMAGE OCCURRED. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT NO LEAF DEBRIS WAS EVIDENT FROM TREES SURROUNDING THE DAMAGE AREA...INDICATING A BRIEF AND CONFINED TOUCHDOWN WITH RELATIVELY WEAKER WINDS ELSEWHERE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THANKS IS EXTENDED TO THE AFFECTED HOMEOWNERS AND THE CHAMPAIGN COUNTY EMA FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE DURING THIS DAMAGE SURVEY. THIS INFORMATION CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE AT WEATHER.GOV/ILN. FOR REFERENCE...THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: EF0...WIND SPEEDS 65 TO 85 MPH. EF1...WIND SPEEDS 86 TO 110 MPH. EF2...WIND SPEEDS 111 TO 135 MPH.
