THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON OH HAS CONFIRMED STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE NEAR WAVERLY IN PIKE COUNTY OHIO ON 05/14/2014. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RESPONDED TO DAMAGE REPORTED BY PIKE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND A TRAINED SPOTTER IN THE AREA OF BUCHANAN WEST OF WAVERLY OHIO. NWS PERSONNEL OBSERVED DAMAGE ALONG THE 400 BLOCK OF CARL PENN ROAD WHERE A LARGE TREE WAS UPROOTED AND A LARGE ALUMINUM OUTBUILDING HAD A ROUGHLY 12 FOOT AWNING AND ABOUT HALF OF THE ROOF AND WOOD BEAM ROOFING STRUCTURE LIFTED OFF OF THE BUILDING. THE OUTBUILDING WAS ON PROPERTY WHICH WAS ON A RIDGE MUCH HIGHER THAN SURROUNDING LOCATIONS. ALL OF THE DAMAGE WAS IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION...WITH NO INDICATIONS OF BACKSPLATTER OR ROTATION WITHIN THE ROOFING...STRUCTURAL OR NEARBY TREES TO INDICATE TORNADIC DAMAGE. THE HOMEOWNER WAS ALSO INTERVIEWED. HE WAS HOME AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE AND DID NOT WITNESS ANY ROTATION OR GROUND BASED DAMAGE...JUST THAT HE OBSERVED THE AWNING AND ROOF HAD BEEN LIFTED FROM THE STRUCTURE. THERE WERE SPOTTER REPORTS OF SIGNIFICANT ROTATION AND LIKELY FUNNEL CLOUDS IN THE AREA...BUT THERE WAS NOT A CLEAR CONFIRMATION OF WHETHER THE FUNNEL MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. NWS PERSONNEL DID NOT FIND EVIDENCE OF TORNADIC TYPE DAMAGE IN THE AREA. FOR REFERENCE... STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS. $$ JDR |
