THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON OH HAS CONFIRMED A MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR 3 SSE HILLIARD IN FRANKLIN COUNTY OHIO ON JULY 10 2013. A DAMAGE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TODAY. INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE STORM WHICH PRODUCED DAMAGE IN HILLIARD...OHIO LAST EVENING AT APPROXIMATELY 4 PM EDT WAS A MICROBURST. THE DAMAGE TO AT LEAST 4 INDUSTRIAL/WAREHOUSE BUILDINGS WAS SIGNIFICANT WITH AT LEAST SOME ROOF LOSS FOUND AT 2 TO 3 SITES AND MAJOR DAMAGE TO PARTS OF AT LEAST SEVERAL OF THE BUILDINGS. THE MICROBURST DETERMINATION WAS BASED ON THE DEBRIS PATTERN AND SOME EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS. THIS WAS A VERY HIGH END STRAIGHT LINE WIND EVENT AND IN THESE EVENTS TURBULENCE AND SOME EDDIES OFTEN DEVELOP. FOR REFERENCE... A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN 5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE.
