THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON OH HAS CONFIRMED A TORNADO NEAR LIBERTY TOWNSHIP IN BUTLER COUNTY OHIO ON MAY 26 2011. A HIGH END EF1 TORNADO PATH WAS SURVEYED IN LIBERTY TOWNSHIP... JUST NORTH OF HIGHWAY 129 IN SOUTHEAST BUTLER COUNTY. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OCCURRED IN THE GLEN HOLLOW AND HOLLOW RIDGE DRIVE AREAS JUST NORTH OF HIGHWAY 129...WHERE AN ENTIRE ROOF WAS LIFTED OFF A TWO STORY HOME. THE INTERIOR WALLS WERE INTACT...AND MUCH OF THE INTERIOR FURNITURE AND ITEMS IN THE ROOMS WERE INTACT. EXTERIOR WALLS DID COLLAPSE. THE ROOF OF THE HOME WAS CARRIED ROUGHLY 200 YARDS AWAY. THIS DAMAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH WINDS IN THE 95 TO 105 MPH RANGE. SIGNIFICANT ROOF DAMAGE ALSO OCCURRED ON AT LEAST ONE ADDITIONAL HOME ON GLEN HOLLOW DRIVE. ADDITIONALLY...ONE MID SIZED SEDAN WAS FLIPPED OVER...WHILE ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED FROM ITS POSITION. ON THE CORNER OF GLEN HOLLOW AND HOLLOW RIDGE DRIVES...A HOME HAD A LARGE SECTION OF ITS ROOF LIFTED AND SHIFTED OFF THE MAIN STRUCTURE. THE AREA ABOVE DESCRIBES THE EXTENT OF THE EF1 LEVEL DAMAGE. THE TORNADO WEAKENED SOMEWHAT TO PRODUCE DAMAGE MORE CONSISTENT WITH HIGH END EF0 DAMAGE AS IT FOLLOWED IN A NORTHEAST DIRECTION. NUMEROUS LARGE HARDWOOD TREES WERE EITHER SNAPPED OR HAD LARGE BRANCHES BROKEN. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL HOMES WITH MORE MINOR ROOF AND SIDING DAMAGE...AS WELL AS BROKEN WINDOWS. THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE EXTENDED NORTHEAST TO THE HOLLOWAY DRIVE AND PENNY LANE AREAS NORTHWEST OF THE INTERSECTION OF PRINCETON AND YANKEE ROADS. DAMAGE IN THIS AREA INCLUDED SEVERAL LARGE TREES SNAPPED...AS WELL AS ROOF...SHUTTER AND SIDING DAMAGE. THIS DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY WINDS IN THE 80 TO 85 MPH RANGE. FURTHER NORTHEAST ALONG THE 6200 BLOCK OF YANKEE ROAD...ONE HOME HAD A LARGE SECTION OF ROOF DAMAGE...WITH A NEARBY HOME SUSTAINING A PARTIAL PORCH ROOF COLLAPSE. NUMEROUS LARGE TREES WERE SNAPPED OR HAD LARGE BRANCHES SNAPPED IN THIS AREA. THE TORNDADIC DAMAGE ENDED JUST NORTH OF MILIKIN ROAD...BETWEEN YANKEE ROAD AND CINCINNATI-DAYTON ROAD. NUMEROUS TREES WERE SNAPPED OR LARGE BRANCHES BROKEN...AS WELL AS POWER POLES SNAPPED AND ROOF AND SIDING DAMAGE ON HOMES. ADDITIONAL STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE WAS FOUND BETWEEN HAMILTON MASON ROAD AND ROUTE 129...IN THE GREENBRIER SUBDIVISION. THIS DAMAGE WAS CONSISTENT WITH WIND SPEEDS IN THE 70 TO 75 MPH RANGE...AND INCLUDED MINOR DAMAGE TO ROOFS AND SIDING...AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO TREES. FURTHER NORTHEAST...TREE DAMAGE WAS ALSO OBSERVED ALONG INTERSTATE 75 NEAR THE KYLES STATION ROAD OVERPASS. FOR REFERENCE...THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: EF0...WIND SPEEDS 65 TO 85 MPH. EF1...WIND SPEEDS 86 TO 110 MPH. EF2...WIND SPEEDS 111 TO 135 MPH.
