Tornadoes in Franklin and Pickaway Counties |
PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...UPDATED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON OH 417 PM EDT THU OCT 12 2006 ...TWO SEPARATE TORNADOES IN EXTREME NORTHWEST PICKAWAY AND NORTHEAST FRANKLIN COUNTY OHIO CONFIRMED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DAMAGE SURVEY... THE WILMINGTON NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE CONDUCTED A STORM DAMAGE SURVEY IN FRANKLIN AND PICKAWAY COUNTIES TODAY. THE DAMAGE SUSTAINED IN NORTHWEST PICKAWAY COUNTY WAS CONSISTENT WITH MAINLY F1 DAMAGE ON THE FUJITA SCALE...WITH ISOLATED LOW END F2 DAMAGE. F1 DAMAGE IS CHARACTERIZED BY WINDS OF 73 TO 112 MPH...WHILE THE F2 DAMAGE WAS IN THE RANGE OF 120 MPH. DAMAGE IN PICKAWAY COUNTY WAS ALONG A VERY SHORT PATH...ALONG A SHORT LENGTH OF CARSON ROAD JUST WEST OF INTERSTATE 71. SOME ADDITIONAL DAMAGE WAS NEAR CRAEMER ROAD. THE DAMAGE ALONG CARSON ROAD CONSISTED OF A DESTROYED WOOD AND CINDER BLOCK BARN...IN WHICH THE CINDER BLOCKS WERE CARRIED 200 TO 300 YARDS ONTO NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES. TWO BY FOUR AND FOUR BY FOUR WOOD PIECES WERE STREWN ONTO NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES...IN WHICH SOME OF THE WOOD PIECES IMPALED EITHER THE NEARBY TURF OR ASPHALT DRIVEWAY. THE REMAINING DAMAGE WAS MORE CONSISTENT WITH F1 DAMAGE...WHICH CONSISTED OF LARGE TREES WERE EITHER SNAPPED OR UPROOTED...PORTIONS OF ROOFS PEELED OFF...AND WINDOWS BROKEN DUE TO THE WIND IMPACT. DAMAGE IN PICKAWAY COUNTY OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 625 PM...WITH THE DAMAGE HAVING OCCURRED ONLY OVER ABOUT A 1 MINUTE PERIOD. DAMAGE IN NORTHEAST FRANKLIN COUNTY WAS ALSO CONSISTENT WITH MOSTLY F1 DAMAGE...BUT WITH SOME LOW END F2 DAMAGE. THE DAMAGE IN NORTHEAST FRANKLIN COUNTY WAS IN PLAIN TOWNSHIP...IN THE UPPER ALBANY WEST SUBDIVISION OFF CENTRAL COLLEGE ROAD. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO AT LEAST 7 HOMES...WITH NUMEROUS OTHER HOMES SUSTAINING AT LEAST MINOR DAMAGE. SOME ALUMINUM AND WOOD STRUCTURE GARAGES WERE COLLAPSED...WITH PORTIONS CARRIED SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET. A LARGE SECTION OF A ROOF GABLE WAS LIFTED AND THROWN INTO A HOME A BLOCK AWAY...RESULTING IN A PARTIAL COLLAPSE OF THE WALL OF THE HOME. MANY HOMES SUSTAINED BROKEN WINDOWS AND LARGE SECTIONS OF SIDING TORN AWAY...WITH ROOF DAMAGE TO SEVERAL HOMES. DAMAGE IN NORTHEAST FRANKLIN COUNTY...OCCURRED BETWEEN 649 AND 655 PM. THE DAMAGE WAS A RESULT OF STORMS THAT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA WEDNESDAY EVENING...OCTOBER 11. $$ JDR |
