...STRAIGHT LINE MICROBURST WINDS IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY...

THE STORMS THAT WENT THROUGH CENTRAL OHIO SHORTLY AFTER 10 PM ON
WEDNESDAY EVENING CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO SEVERAL STRUCTURES...
INCLUDING THE ROOF BEING RIPPED OFF OF A HOUSE. AFTER REVIEWING THE
PATTERN OF THE DEBRIS...IT WAS DETERMINED THAT STRAIGHT LINE WINDS
FROM A DOWNBURST WERE THE CAUSE OF THIS DAMAGE. THE ESTIMATED SPEED
OF THE DOWNBURST WINDS WAS FROM 75 TO 85 MPH.

THE CLASSIFICATION OF THIS DOWNBURST IS A MICROBURST AS THE DAMAGE
PATH WAS LESS THAN 2.5 MILES WIDE. DOWNBURSTS THAT CREATE A PATH OF
DAMAGE LARGER THAN 2.5 MILES WIDE ARE CALLED MACROBURSTS. IN EITHER
OF THESE PHENOMENON...SURFACE WINDS CAN EXCEED THAT OF LOW END (F0
AND F1) TORNADOS.

...STORMS PRODUCE STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE IN DARKE COUNTY...

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICIALS HAVE CONCLUDED THAT SEVERE STORMS
THAT MOVED ACROSS DARKE COUNTY WEDNESDAY EVENING PRODUCED DAMAGE
CAUSED BY STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS. THE STORMS CAUSED SCATTERED WIND
DAMAGE FROM THE SOUTHWEST TO THE EAST PART OF THE COUNTY KNOCKING
DOWN TREES AND POWER LINES. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OCCURRED AT
A PROPERTY NEAR GETTYSBURG WHERE TWO BARNS WERE DAMAGED. THE WIND
SPEEDS WERE ESTIMATED TO BE UP TO 80 MPH IN DARKE COUNTY.
