Wet and cold backcountry conditions are anticipated Wednesday night through Friday morning. Cold rainfall is expected at lower elevations, with snow possible above 6000 feet. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s in the backcountry. Potential hazards include hypothermia, and slippery roads and trails. Be sure to let others know of your travel plans, have an emergency plan and kit ready, have appropriate gear for the weather, and be ready for rapidly changing conditions.
Daily chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms will persist through Thursday across Southwest, Central, and North Central Montana; with the best chance for widespread precipitation arriving Wednesday morning and lasting through Thursday morning, especially across Central Montana.
Southwest to west winds will increase this weekend and into the day on Memorial Day across Southwest through North Central Montana, with the strongest winds expected on Memorial Day. Area lakes, reservoirs, and long fetches of rivers will become rough and choppy, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. While air temperatures will be in the 70s to low 80s water temperatures remain significantly colder at between 45° to 55°. Cold shock can be just as severe and dangerous from water temperatures of 50° to 60° as it is from water at 35°.
