The NWS Green Bay WSR-88D Doppler radar (also known as NEXRAD) will be unavailable during much of the period from September 18-22 as work is done on updating the transmitter.

Technicians will refurbish the transmitter which will help keep the radar operating for another 20 years. Although the function of the transmitter will remain the same, old components and cables original to the radar will be replaced with modern parts and new cables. This transmitter update is the second major project of the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, a series of upgrades and replacements that will keep our nation’s radars viable into the 2030’s. The National Weather Service, the United States Air Force, and the Federal Aviation Administration are investing $150 million in the project. The first part was the installation of a new signal processor. The two remaining projects are the refurbishment of the pedestal and equipment shelters. The Service Life Extension Program will be complete in 2022.

The NWS Green Bay WSR-88D is part of a network of 159 operational radars. The NWS Radar Operations Center in Norman, Oklahoma, provides life-cycle management and support for all WSR-88Ds.
