Heavy Rains from the Plains to the East; Fire Weather Risk in the Desert Southwest

Thunderstorms, some severe, may produce heavy to excessive rainfall and isolated flooding over portions of the Southern Plains through Saturday. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will spread east into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Mid Atlantic and Northeast. Some of the coldest air of the season will arrive this week, with many locations experiencing their first subzero temperatures of the winter. The table below depicts the 1981-2010 average date of the 1st subzero temperature of the winter season. The date of the first subzero temperature of the season can vary greatly from season to season. Subzero temperatures have been reported as early as early November across the northern half of the state, with the latest first subzero temperatures occurring as late as late December or into January in some seasons. The average dates are based on available data for each site.
