The bar chart below denotes the number of tornadoes that have occurred in Kit Carson County since 1950.  The blue bars show the number of tornadoes that occurred in a given year.  For example, 11 tornadoes occurred in 1993 and 12 tornadoes occurred in 2007.  In 2018, eight tornadoes occurred over the course of two days.  Seven of those tornadoes occurred on a single day, May 28!  More information on the tornadoes that have occurred can be found in the table at the bottom of this page.

 

 

The blue bars on the chart below show the number of tornadoes that occurred in each month in Kit Carson County since 1950.  The orange bars indicate the number of tornado days that occurred in each month.  A tornado day is defined as a day where at least one tornado occurred.  To better understand this chart, take a look at the month of May.  The blue bar shows that 38 tornadoes have occurred in the month of May.  The orange bar shows that there have been 29 days in May where tornadoes occurred.  The number of tornadoes exceeds the number of tornado days, so we can infer that one or more days had multiple tornado reports. 

 

 

The following table is a list of the tornadoes that have occurred in Kit Carson County.  Length is the length of the tornado path measured in miles.  The width of the tornado is measured in yards.  An ‘M’ indicates that the data is missing.  Scale indicates the F or EF rating a tornado was assigned.  In the scale column, a letter without a number indicates that a scale value was not assigned.
