National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Severe weather was widespread across eastern Colorado and northwest Kansas on May 9, 2015.  The number of tornadoes that occurred is still being determined. However, two long tracked supercell thunderstorms, which produced tornadoes, occurred during the late afternoon and evening.  The first supercell developed in Kiowa County, Colorado, and tracked north across Cheyenne and southern Kit Carson Counties.  The other developed in northern Lane County, Kansas, and tracked north across Gove, Sheridan and Decatur Counties in Kansas into Red Willow County, Nebraska.

Some damage has been reported with these tornadoes. Some irrigation pivots were destroyed in Gove County and powerlines were knocked down in Decatur County. There was one instance of structural damage on a farm that was reported. The vast majority of these tornadoes remained over open fields with no additional damage reported. Widespread heavy rainfall fell across portions of the area and flooded roadways, fields and draws were reported in Sherman and Cheyenne Counties in Kansas.
