Overview
A significant weather event occurred on Friday, December 2nd, 2022. A potent cold front moved across the area, bringing high winds, a wall of dust, and dangerous fire weather conditions. In addition, winds ahead of the front picked up, bringing additional fire weather concerns as well as dust storm conditions. Numerous watches, warnings, and advisories were issued, including High Wind Warnings, Dust Storm Warnings, Blowing Dust Warnings, and Red Flag Warnings.Event Summary
A surface trough was located over the Rockies moving to the ESE through the day as a cold front. Ahead of the front breezy to gusty westerly down sloping winds were present over the majority of the area resulting in well above normal temperatures well into the 70s along with dry air advection into the area. Behind the cold front, forecast models were highly suggestive of a high wind event unfolding as forecast soundings consistently had 50-60 knots flow within the mixing layer. This along with strong cold air advection behind the front presented a nearly ideal case of strong to damaging winds occurring behind the cold front. Several days in advance, forecasters at the WFO Goodland office were concerned with the potential for critical fire weather developing across the area due to pattern recognition. 48-72 hours before the event, local office blowing dust research was suggesting that organized blowing dust and perhaps a wall of dust may become a possibility by showing unstable 0-2km Lapse Rates exceeding 9 C/KM and more stable 2-2.5km Lapse Rates that would assist with keeping any dust confined near the surface. The most concerning aspect was that some model runs had these parameters correlated with the cold frontal passage which would support the wall of dust occurring. The overnight shift before the event becoming increasingly concerned with the wall of dust as nearly every run of guidance had the favorable parameters correlated with the cold front and began messaging that the wall of dust was becoming increasingly likely. All of these hazards in place lead to the expectation of a widespread impactful day including the potential for explosive wildfire development. During the on December 2nd, a wall of dust developed along the cold front as expected in northern portions of Washington and Phillips counties in Colorado and progressed to the SE across the entire area. Multiple reports of near zero visibility was reported with the wall of dust, along with a dramatic increase in winds of 60-70 mph. The highest wind gust was reported 2 WNW of Sharon Springs at 75 mph. A wildfire was started from the intense winds associated with the wall of dust in Logan County to the west of Russell Springs, Kansas as the strong winds downed a powerline resulting in a large grassfire.
