- Offshore marine forecasts are subdivided by zone, each identified by text description and a Universal Generic Code (UGC). These forecasts are prepared by the Marine Prediction Center (MPC), Tropical Prediction Center, Honolulu Forecast Office and Anchorage Forecast Office.

- To deliniate the offshore zones for the use in creating offshore marine forecasts.

- For zones adjoinging coastal marine zones, a buffer was created to follow coastal zones out to the specified distance. In the Alantic, specific latitude/longitude points were specified by MPC to delineate the easternmost corner of each zone. The western boundary was created by "unioning" the outer coastal marine zones to the offshore zones.
