Heat Continues for the East and South-Central U.S.; Strong to Severe Storms Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The extremely dangerous heat wave continues across the East Coast and much of the South-Central U.S. today. Record high temperatures are expected for some areas especially across the Mid-Atlantic where extreme heat risk conditions reside. 2016 North Central Kansas Precipitation Summary (Rooks/Phillips/Smith/Osborne/Jewell/Mitchell counties):  This year will clearly be remembered for being wetter-than-normal, as nearly this entire 6-county area ended up measuring between 110-150% of normal annual precipitation More specifically, most of the area received anywhere from 25-35". As for extremes, the driest of 18 primary NWS Cooperative Observer stations within the area was Phillipsburg with 25.93" (0.51" above normal) and the wettest site was Natoma with 36.41" (a notable 10.12" above normal). Many of these official stations recorded one of their Top-10 wettest years on record.

According to 30-year data from NCEI 1981-2010, normal annual precipitation across this six-county area generally ranges from 23-28", with the lowest amounts favoring the western counties of Rooks/Phillips and the highest amounts favoring the eastern counties of Jewell/Mitchell.
