Heavy Rainfall to Bring Flooding Threat to California; Heavy Snow in the Sierra

A strong atmospheric river will bring heavy rainfall to California through the holiday week. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Wednesday in the Los Angeles Basin. Flash and urban flooding is possible. A prolonged heavy snowfall is expected in the Sierra Nevada from the atmospheric river, raising concerns for major snow‐load impacts. Our warm/dry pattern is going to come to an end Tuesday Night through at least the end of the week. Majority of precipitation should fall as rain through Friday afternoon, with snow levels above 9000-10000 feet. Snow levels may fall to 6000-7000 feet Friday Night into Saturday.
Daytime highs will continue to land above normal for this time of year, especially for areas across Navajo Nation. Rain and high elevation snow are also in the Christmas Day forecast, but the only places looking to have a White Christmas will be locations above 10,000 feet. Elsewhere, a rainy Holiday is more likely.
Rain chances start Tuesday night and continue at times through at least Friday. Snow levels will be 9000 to 10000 feet through Friday morning, possibly falling to 6000 to 7000 feet by Friday evening into Saturday. Travelers should be prepared for wet driving conditions, with a chance of snow at higher elevations by Friday or Saturday.
