Rain Reports
Ample moisture, lift, and instability in addition to back-building, training, and slow moving storms contributed to heavy rainfall across many locations. At times, rainfall rates were estimated to be 4 to 5 inches per hour. This lead to areas of flash flooding within the Devils Lake basin into central Red River Valley as well as within west-central Minnesota.
Heavy rain rates led to this and other road washouts in portions of eastern North Dakota.

Environment
A shortwave trough ejected out of the Pacific Northwest into the Northern Plains around the northern periphery of a very large upper ridge centered over the CONUS. Strong instability, ample moisture, and strong shear ahead of this shortwave trough allowed for organized, robust convection across many locations within the Dakotas into Minnesota.
Early morning convection June 24 in west-central Minnesota resulting in very large hail and flash flooding was driven by strong warm, moist air advection on the nose of a nocturnal low level jet feeding very unstable but elevated air into a back-building cluster of storms.
Later in the day, daytime heating within a moist boundary layer contributed to strong instability across much of eastern North Dakota into western Minnesota, ahead of a stationary front draped over central North Dakota. As the shortwave trough approached, overall kinematics (wind energy) responded by increasing, and thus increasing available shear for storm organization. Robust, semi-discrete convection exhibiting supercellular characteristics initially developed along the stationary boundary from near Jamestown to Devils Lake. Upon initiation, landspout-type tornadoes formed in Cavalier County as well as Wells County in North Dakota, along with splitting supercells leading to large hail and gusty winds. However, shear vectors parallel to the front congealed storms quickly forming a quasi-linear convective system (QLCS). Training of storm cores led to very heavy rainfall rates and flash flooding within eastern North Dakota. Storms quickly developed outflow boundaries which helped start a propagation to the east. Outflow boundary interactions and attendant updrafts lead to additional tornadoes near Pekin and Larimore, North Dakota. The congealed cold pools led to damaging wind gusts up to 88 mph. These cold pools picked up dirt and dust from area fields still bare from delayed planting, resulting in what could be described as a "haboob," or a large collection of dust leading to significantly reduced visibility along the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow. As sunset approached, the QLCS moved into Minnesota while the nocturnal low level jet re-developed helping increasing low level shear. This increase in low level shear helped introduce the development of QLCS mesovortices which lead to additional line-embedded tornadoes within northwest and west-central Minnesota, including the 30 mile long tornado from Rochert to Menahga.
This severe episode overall was very dynamic and meteorologically interesting, showcasing many "unorthodox" impactful weather events.
