Overview
In the wake of a passing cold front, strong northwest winds produced ground blizzard conditions across the Devils Lake basin into the northern Red River Valley and adjacent portions of northwest Minnesota during the late morning and afternoon hours of Thursday, January 8. Although snowfall ahead of the strong winds was light, less than 2 inches, northwest winds from 35 to 50 mph combined with the existing snow cover to produce near zero visibility in many areas. The worst conditions developed in rural areas along the internaional border during the late morning, spreading southward during the afternoon. Conditions improved significantly by evening.
