Overview
Numerous severe thunderstorms occurred across southeast Michigan on June 10 as a strong upper level wave swept over the Great Lakes while an unstable low-level air mass was in place. This warm and moist environment was brought into place by the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal which tracked through the western Great Lakes the evening before. Wind damage was widespread across the area with hundreds of thousands of customers losing power due to downed trees and wires.

National Storm Reports (for June 10, 2020):
Environment
The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal tracked from the Gulf Coast of Louisiana up the Mississippi River Valley, reaching the western Great Lakes on the evening of June 9. Scattered showers and storms moved through southeast Michigan late that evening as a warm front associated with the post-tropical system lifted through. These storms remained sub-severe, however the warm and moist air mass that moved in helped set the stage for a widespread severe weather event on June 10.
Dew points reached the lower 70s across southeast Michigan by the early morning on June 10. Temperatures rose into the upper 80s to lower 90s by early afternoon while winds became gusty (30-35 mph) due to an increased pressure gradient in the wake of the departing tropical remnants which were located over central Ontario by the afternoon (see Figure 2 below). An upper trough was positioned over the upper midwest that afternoon while a potent shortwave rotated around it and took on a negative tilt as it reached the Great Lakes. Jet stream energy around this feature led to increased effective wind shear to 40+ kt by the early afternoon (Figure 8). Midlevel warm air was initially in place during the morning, but the shortwave helped erode this cap which opened the door for convection to develop. With the warm and moist air at the surface and cool and dry air aloft, instability was high with 3000 J/kg of surface-based CAPE observed in the 18z special weather balloon sounding (Figure 5). A strong wind field was noted throughout the atmospheric column as well with southwest winds over 50 kt through the 700-500mb layer. Precipitable water came in at 1.66 inches which indicated potential for heavy downpours with any storms.
Storms developed over northern Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan during the late morning along a surface trough/convergence axis ahead of the cold front set to sweep through later in the afternoon/evening. These storms raced northeastward at roughly 50 mph and reached the Saginaw Valley region by early afternoon, taking on a bowing structure and causing widespread wind damage across this area. Widespread power outages resulted from these storms, and a gust as high as 69 mph was measured at MBS International Airport in Freeland. One person was injured when a tree fell on their car in Saginaw.
Shortly after, storms began to fill in across the rest of central Lower Michigan and progress eastward through the rest of the afternoon. Wind damage reports were very common across the area with numerous trees downed and several instances of roof damage. Over 450,000 customers lost power across the state due to the storms. While damaging wind was the main hazard, severe hail occurred with a few storms including one over downtown Detroit. Localized flooding also occurred as storms trained over certain areas for extended periods of time, including Saginaw where a portion of I-75 was closed due to flooding. Rainfall amounts were generally 1 to 1.5 inches, though some localized areas near Saginaw likely saw closer to 2 inches.
